    it's official, i'm now a gunsmith...

The only thing official about being a gunsmith and making a living at it, is you will not get rich, but hopefully be able to pay the bills. But.......you should be very happy doing what I think most of us here love to do.

    ? chucking up a barrel ?

My thoughts exactly Butch. If you was to indicate dead nuts ahead of the throat a few inches or whatever, then how in the world would the bullet be seeing straight at the point in which it starts??? Unless of course the bore is perfectly straight, which none are. IMHO, you start the bullet as...

    ? chucking up a barrel ?

Not sure I follow you here, but the reamer is going to follow the pre-bored hole and continue past that still being guided by the hole previously bored, because the reamer will never totally leave the pre-bored hole. As long as your set-up is dialed in correctly it's not going to wander. If your...

    Devcon Plastic Steel

I like Steel Bed or Pro Bed 2000 quite a bit more. Steel-Bed is getting way overpriced though.

    scope height

It's very simple to do with calipers. Here's how I do it... Measure from the bottom of the scope tube(not the objective), to the top of the bolt body. Then add to this figure, 1/2 the diameter of the scope tube and 1/2 the diameter of the bolt body...done.

    A question to viper shooters

Duracoat is absolute junk compared to cerakote. I have cerakoted Lots os BAT's, Pandas, Bordens, Rem's and Winny.etc. Cerakote can be cured at lower temps for extended periods of time for the full cure. Cerakote recommends 250*F @ 2hrs or for quick cure (which I never use) 300*F at one hour. I...

    Cerakote camo?

Al, Lay down your first color then stick it in the oven for about 15 minutes at about 150*F It should then be flashed enough to touch. Lay down your next color and do the same again. Once you do your last color then bake at 250*F for the two hours. This is assuming your talking barreled...

    timming a jewell trigger

Jim is one of the few people that fully understand the ignition systems on a rifle and how they should work. I personally like Jim's action out of all of them because of this. His fit finish and tolerances are also second to none. No I am not a paid sponsor. But if Jim wants to send me an...

Pull, reinstall bbl without damaging finish?

I've pulled cerakoted barrels successfully without harming the finish by using a couple wraps of drywall paper and good fitting aluminum bushings for the barrel.

    6.5x47 lapua reamer .295 nk

Anybody running a 6.5x47 Lapua with a no-turn .295 nk?? I have a .295 no turn 6.5x47 lapua reamer coming from Kiff at PT&G on his suggestion, but the last rifle I had in this chamber had a .293 no turn nk and shot very well. Hopefully the extra .001 per-side doesn't negatively effect the...

    Chamber polishing

I give my chambers a slight cross hatch polish with some 600 grit dipped in WD-40 and don't see any downfall, or pick up any runout with the indicator after. In fact, I don't have enough time in the day to polish long enough on the lathe to change dimensions let alone .001" Do you realize how...

Dialing in the tailstock with a Coaxial indicator

I understand that some tailstocks on the new import lathes come in a little high with the thought that they will wear in over time....whatever, it's fine with me. But, let your lathe run for 15 or 20 minutes and warm up. Then re-check your tailstock.

    lathe test bar

Chucked up a piece of 1 3/4" OD aluminum tube and turned it (NOT between centers) to see how the lathe leveled up and if there is any bed twist. I got about .0003" difference over 8" after my finish cut. Would you guys call it good?

looking thru the bore after its dialed in for chambering

Some are straighter than others, I wouldn't worry too much about it. I would probably index the high spot (muzzle end) at 12'oclock when threading. I had a 6.5 Bartlein barrel that looked like a friggin' jump rope that I darn near sent back (worst one I have seen), but sure am glad I didn't...

Ground tool for bolt face clean up

Jim S, That's what I'm looking for. I have one in my mind, but was looking for pictures before I start grinding. If I grind it right it should reach just behind the extractor so I don't have to remove it. Thanks for posting your pics Jerry.
