    257 Roberts Improved

I headspaced my 257RAI 40 degree with a standard 257R headspace. That is a mistake, and should be .004" shorter for shoulder - neck joint ring crush. As a result I have to do an extra step of case forming with cream of wheat and 10 gr of pistol powder. By the time I have prepped and formed...

    223 which factory brand?

A friend of mine went to the Miles City range yesterday because there was no wind. He shot a 0.200" 5 shot group at 100 yards with a cheapest Rem700 box stock .223 with the cheapest Asian 6x18 scope with 40 gr Vmax moly 26 gr H335. What does it all mean? The .223 rifle is not as important as...

    260 help

I have problems with hunting rifles. The variable of the skinny barrel, heavy bullet, and light gun is the difference. If the barrel warps with heat, the groups are off. If I don't handle the recoil the same way, the groups are off. But a bull barrel with 33 gr bullet always acts the same.

    Inside boring and threading

The first time I made internal threads, I read the instructions in the machining book, and then ignored them. I figured I was smart enough to figure it out. The threads would not fit. I had made left hand threads. It turns out that is common. Guy thinks he is smart, but gets left hand...

    Interapid test indicator

Vertical Interapid 312b-15V has .0005" graduations. At an auction I got an Interapid test indicator with .0001" graduations. It is too sensitive for dialing in a bore with the 4 jaw. I prefer to dial in bores with .001" or .0005" graduations.

    Mini-Lathe Instructions?

I got a mini lathe ~8 years ago. The cross feed and compound are too copliant for cutting metal with a tool bit. It can cut plastic with a tool bit. It can cut metal if a Dremel tool flex arm in held in the tool post with a V block. It does a good job of drilling and reaming. It does a good...

    6 BR reamer question

That 6mmBR is an old 1917 Sav99 take down with a recycled re chambered 6mmPPC benchrest take off barrel. The firing pin hole is too large to get the full potential of pressure with CCI450 primers. I know I should build another rifle.

    Blow up puzzler

This is an LC 97 .223 case head that failed when my friend Den was prairie dog hunting. The poor gas routing of his new Rem700 hurt his eye. He had to drive a long way to find a doctor.

    Gunmithing

I started buying broken 22 rifles at pawn shops 15 years ago and getting replacement parts at Numrich Gun Parts Corp. I fixed them and sold them on consignment at another pawn shop. After many rifles, I only knew how to fix broken old 22s. I bought dozens of gunsmithing books. I built some FAL...

    6 BR reamer question

I cannot stabilize .935" 75 gr Vmax bullets with 1 in 14" twist. I can stabilize .835" 65 gr Vmax bullets with 1 in 14" twist. The thing to look out for is bullets that stabilize at short range, but not long range. The 75 gr work of 50 yards at 3000 ~3100 fps, but not at 100 yards.

I bought my brother one 8 years ago. I can see they still make them in the UK. I can't seem to find one in the USA via a Google search http://www.moore-and-wright.co.uk/main/screwcutting.htm

    Which 6mm with small primer

I can get 6mmPPC take off barrels for $75, ream them out to 6mmBR and get small groups. But the bullets are light, and the velocities are low. 1) With a 1 in 14" twist rate, 65 gr stabilize, 75 grain iffy 2) Short barrel is slow 3) Fat barrel is heavy 4) CCI450 small rifle magnum primers will...

    Forrester br dies

I have Forster dies back to Forster to get the neck honed in .223, 6mmBR, 243, 257RAI, 30-30, 308, 8x57, and 338WM. So I no longer use a sizer ball with them. I have some that have original tight necks, and I don't use the sizer ball with them either.
