Lothar Walthar BBLs

You use what to measure with?

Tape measure works for me. But seriously is it how Mid state stored their BBLs that caused the problem? I see on equipment list that Shilen BBLs win a lot of matches. I'm a varmint rifle own I shoot a dragon 6x284 sounds like that LW BBL might do me some good. Problem I have a Hart varmint contour BBL now my gunsmith has run a bore scope down it and says there is significant throat erosion ! But the rifle still delivers under 1/2MOA at 100. I mostly shot max loads and about 700 rnds through BBL so far. So just how bad is throat erosion? Sounds like my gun smith wants some work early?

Ben,
You mentioned the .001 not me. I use a Deltronic pin in the muzzle and indicate the throat area on the breech end. I drill, reindicate the breech grooves and bore and ream. Sorry that I haven't mentioned it to you before.
I am not Jackie, but I would have sent the barrel back if it were like you described. You did keep the end of the barrel that you cut off? If you don't it is a good idea.
Butch

OK Butch, I know hindsight is 20-20, but I chambered it, oh well, and to be clear, I do not owe Shilen a courtesy anything as I have already paid them $300. I only owe the people here, the truth.

Thanks for taking hours composing long detailed procedures on chambering painstakingly documenting your techniques and procedures for the novice like myself.

Something about deltronic pins, and boring, with some kinda boring tool? or stub drill, on a compound rest for the case angle, or straight boring? Or something? Maybe you grind or solder your own tools? Or drill then Bore.. or bore with a roughing reamer...who knows.

Oh well, we'll figure it out.

My Experience with LW..

I was at the shot show about 3 years ago and approached the LW representative in his booth. We talked a few minutes and after asking him a few questions about how they recomended chambering their barrels. He reacted in a very insulting way, implying that I was a complete idiot. Maybe I am an idiot, but I have chambered my share of barrels over the last 35 yeras. Up until about 5 years ago I chambered the slow ream and clean way. I decided to take a chance and build a high pressure flush system. My eyes were quickly opened to there was another and better way to chamber. Through the headstock or with a center bearing cathead in the steady rest. Ridgid setups and higher speed means lighter cuts, better finishes, less chatter, less induced stress and longer tool wear. I don't feel my customers or I have suffered from not using LW barrels. I think I will stick with the Krieigers, Broughtons, Rock Creeks, Bartleins, Bruxes, LiLjas, Harts etc.

The original question was"Will there barrels cut it in Competitive Benchrest"?? I can only say that until they get a few of them on match equipment lists we'll never know. But rest assured, if they would shoot competitive AGGS they would be in the reports and I simply don't see that. My beef with LW?? None, in any manner! But others seem to want to spend their bux on other known, competitive barrels. This is one of the few freedoms of choice afforded us and quite a few shooters seem to avail themselves of that choice. Why would an experienced shooter pick a barrel of unknown quality over a known winner??

The original question was nothing of the sort. Go back and read it. Then look at where the answers led and wonder "what the ......?"

Ackman;
You are correct. Please accept my humble apology!

Shilen Chrome moly...fouls like crap
Lothar Walther Chrome moly...shoots perfect
Shilen Stainless...cuts like budduh, shoots perfect
Lothar Walther stainless...don't have any

Mike, no need to apologize about anything. The thread changed course drastically and turned into something else completely. Funny to read what was asked, which had nothing to do with benchrest shooting, then see where it went as people scrambled to show what experts they are.

Yes it might of sounded goofy they way I asked this question. When I'm posting questions on this are any forum I'm off work and enjoying this aspect of our hobby . Life's too short to be serious all the time. Its fun to laugh ,were the only animals of Gods creation that can laugh. Have you ever seen a Rainbow trout laugh?
