    Neck turing 30BR, results

Reguardless of how necks are expanded, there will be a slightly tighter area inside where the neck and shoulder meet. This is because the shoulder gives more support to the neck in that place. It is obviously more work, however I ream the I.D. prior to turning and have no problem making 50 cases...

    Chronograph problem solution

A few years back, I began using lightly frosted panels above my screens with an oehler 33. Seems much more dependable in a wide variety of lighting. They are approx. 8'' by 18''.

What digital 1" micrometer to buy

Wether your measuring with mechanical or electronic or digital, there is a certain feel that needs to be learned. The wrong amount of pressure will not affect your reading much when measuring a guage block, but will give you bad numbers when measuring a small pilot bushing. Measuring case necks...

Gap space, and that dirty little corner

At one time, I fired a lot of primed cases, no powder or bullets. I don't recall what my purpose was now. What did happen was for 4-6 inches in the barrel , the deposits from the primers alone was miserable to remove. It defied nearly everything I tried and eventually went away with a lot...

    Carbon cleaner

I have been using this for many years. I have both pop-tops and screw off lids on metal cans both Pt # 1050002. The can says removes gum, varnish and other deposits. It does not specifically say carbon remover. A couple wet patches does seem to push out powder residue better than...

    Rmoving a Glued in Action

Have been playing with the idea of using a ceramic heating element such as what is used in a electric soldering iron. It can be placed inside the action . These can also be purchased from electric supply dealers. They are available in different sizes and wattage. Thinking it would transfer heat...

    Runout guage

I for one, have a hard time understanding the difference between having a very true chamber and feeding it crooked ammo, or say having a crooked chamber and feeding it true ammo. If its all meaningless, we could just load with $ 19.95 dies. To assume that all concentricity gauges...

    New shooter needs advice

In my experience, very few factory rifles will perform given the bedding they are born with. I can't recall the last time I shot a factory gun without first making some corrections. None of the companies and that encludes savage with the so-called pillar bedding can regularly pass...

Anybody have a clue about Remington's shop charges ?

VaniB, the bolts used with remington stainless actions are not stainless, just the handles. The bolt bodies are all chrome-moly.

Anybody have a clue about Remington's shop charges ?

I once sent them a barreled action and stated that my wife thru the bolt away. The work order that was sent to me confirmed the problem as " wife thru bolt away" They being the good people they are did correct the problem and replaced the bolt. Bet they chuckled over that a bit. Then I...

    Burning Powder

That brass cases transfer heat to the barrel is easily demonstrated by the fact that cases during fireforming come out hot, whereas cases FL sized or neck sized don,t. There is however sufficient abrasive crud in the powder to cause erosion, no different than the nozzle of a sand blaster. If...

    Burning Powder

I have no doubt that everything mentioned contributes to barrel erosion. I do however wonder why our cases last as well as they do. Given a PPC case, with .008 thick necks and at the time of firing, sit within .030 of all this damage. I have cases that have seen 70 firings, yet no...

Making your rest track perfectly when making a vertical adjustment from the rear leg

The rear or adjustable leg does not need a point. Give it a radius and use anything flat under it. This will bridge the divots in the bench top and easily adopt whatever change there is in point distance. I use an 1/8" piece of delrin. There will be no surprises.

    Technical reamer question

Goodgrouper, You will probably not be comfortable with this reamer , even following regrind. Why not have it purposely ground undersize and use it as a roughing reamer to save wear on a reamer that is more to your approval.

Should my custom rifle maker do one shot one clean on new barrel test?

IMO. It is absolutely neccessary to clean a new barrel, with a brush, before it is fired. There will be micro burrs on the trailing edges in the leade area. If not removed before firing, the micro chips, will embed in the first bullet and plow additional grooves in the bore.
