about to buy first rifle; noob questions

Welcome to the fun. You will probably find as I did that as you read, learn, research equipment within your budget and buy and put that stuff into use, that you will probably never be completely satisfied. Not trying to discourage you, just stating fact as I see it when someone gets bit by the...

    Modeling clay for bedding

When I was building my rifle last winter and was ready to bed my stock, I decided that I HAD to have modeling clay. You know, the stuff we used to play with as kids. Not Play-Dough.....CLAY. Well......I looked around and the only place that I found proper modeling clay (yes, it even smelled...

    H&R M12 question.

From what I could see, they look like Low-Head socket head cap screws. If that is the case, an allen wrench is what you need. Could be metric or standard. Make sure the business end of the wrench is in good condition or you'll booger up the head right quick! Jerry

    Powder scale accruacy

Thanks Mike, I always give that little nudge to a beam scale. Agree....only way to do it. Have also found with the GemPro that when I just trickle up to weight and do not give the pan a lift and set it back on the stage, I usually wind up overweight. Best and quickest results come for me by...

    Powder scale accruacy

To be clear, I shoot long range benchrest. If I shot point blank, I suppose my methods would be different. I did an experiment this afternoon using my RCBS Chargmaster, GemPro 250 and RCBS 10-10 scale. All 3 were set up and zeroed and were calibrated with their respective weights and...

    Nightforce Problem?

http://www.neconos.com/category/Reloading-Aids-16 Bottom of the page. Super Deluxe kit. Done as the last operation before dumping the powder charge into the case. This MUST be done after ultrasonic cleaning as the inside of the necks get "too clean" and can give any number of issues. In my...

    Nightforce Problem?

Frank, I attended the 3-day class that the folks at Williamsport host annually this past April. The biggest point that they make is that consistency in your loads will give you the best chance at success for long range shooting. The low flyer that you experienced on your 4th shot could have...

    260 Remington (Lapua brass problem)

Jeffrey, I run the 142 SMK's with H4350 as well and my gun likes 44 grs. Have run them with 44.5 grs. and not seen any issues with head expansion of the brass. Just slightly flattened primers and slight ejector marks. Having said that, just from my experience with this gun, I wouldn't run it...

    260 Remington (Lapua brass problem)

Jeffrey, I had very similar experiences as you did. When testing loads in my .260 long range bench gun with H4350 and RL19 with 140 Amax, the top loads showed expansion in the case web and primer pockets along with a slight ejector mark, flatter primers and more resistance opening bolt lift...

    Who makes this tool ?

Gabe, Was it one of these? "The Little Crow Gunworks “World’s Finest Trimmer is available for $69.95 from various vendors including Creedmoor Sports. WFTs index off the shoulder, not the base. The case fits tightly into a steel bearing which has been machined to a specific caliber. This...

    Three wire notes part one

Boyd, Understand what you want. Great work on your part. If you are not happy with the piano wire (good idea, by the way) I have a link below for gauge pins. Going back to your post from several days ago about calibrating your micrometers, I put in links for a micrometer standard and a gauge...

    Three wire notes part one

Boyd, Thanks for pointing out that my link did not work. It is fixed now. Both of our links contain the same formulas for using wires that are not the "best wire diameter" for measuring a particular thread. It looks to me that using the "Approximate Formulas for Measured Pitch Diameter"...

    Three wire notes part one

What Lee posted will work. A small hunk of squishy foam works as well. I use a small blob of grease on top and bottom of thread to hold the wires when they are small. Here'e a tip.......when you drop a thread wire into your chip pan, don't touch anything! Look down for the wire. If you...

    Three wire notes part one

Boyd, Check out the link below. I think it will get you the info that you are looking for. "Approximate Formulas for Measured Pitch Diameter The following approximate formulas for computing the pitch diameter, from the measurement over wires, should be used only for screws having lead angles...

    NXS vs Benchrest

JRLesan, I own two 12x42 BR and one 12x42 NXS. Two of them have the NP-2DD reticle and one has the CH-1 reticle. All of these scopes are on bench guns that I shoot in competition mostly at the 200 to 500 yard distance and sometimes at 1000 yards. My NXS has 1/4 min. adjustment and to me...

Tips to remove a really really tight 700 barrel

I have a set-up like Dennis' that I made to remove the barrel from my Rem. 700 varmint. That barrel didn't want to budge. I applied even heat to the front receiver ring (only enough heat to boil spit) and that was enough to loosen the thread locking compound. Crack!.......and off! Good luck...
