trick out 10-22

For anyone who has used anything other then a Bentz chamber for a 10-22, how tight can you go and get reliable feeding? Is there such a thing as a "match semi-auto" chamber/reamer?

I have done a bunch of them and have had no problem feeding.

Jim, Thanks for the reply but my question is, if you are not using the typical "Bentz" chamber, what are you using, how tight at the mouth can I go?

your not going to run into a feeding problem. if you end up with too short of a chamber, you risk an out of battery discharge. the bentz, is the match semi auto chambering.

I have only used the Bentz reamer

Jim, maybe I should start over with a little explanation. I was a part time gunsmith for over 30 years, now retired. I never did benchrest type gunsmithing, mostly repair. I probably built less then twenty custom guns in that time and never a 22 rimfire. The closest I ever came was setting back the barrel of Chinese target rifle, rechambering it and rebuilding the trigger to a few ounces. Have done a bunch of prairie dog guns but thats it.

So where am I now? I have this dumb idea that I want to build me a 70'th birthday gift. Normally I dont even like semi autos (waisted too much ammo with one as a kid) but for reasons I cant explain I want to build one. I have a Shilen octagon barrel, a steel after market reciever, a 1 lb. trigger and a few other odds and ends laying around. My confusion and concern was the chamber. I apparently am mistaken in thinking that the Bentz chamber was an over sized, one size fits all, semi auto chamber. When I looked at the barrels makers sites they all seem to claim their own named Bentz chamber which made me think I needed something else. Thanks for your time and trouble

if your seriously chasing the accuracy of a 10/22, where you were concerned about cutting a minimum chamber, what you really want to look at is the headspace dimensions of the bolt face.

Already taken care of, have been doing that kind of work for 20 years

The problem with a chamber tighter than a 'Benz" is the bolt may not close fully - causing a misfire... match chambers for bolt actions are a different story... you can feel the force required when the bullet id forced into the rifling... but your hand can do that, a semi auto closing by spring force can not...

I barrelled and worked over a few 10-22's... They shot very well but even with match quality barrels they will never complete with the accuracy of a bolt action with a match quality barrel.

You might want to look at.........................

this site. He has never advertised, other than having a site; read about how his 10/22 fire control group helped sweep back to back rimfire silhouette championships.

I imagine you could send your receiver for a threaded barrel installation, as he also makes both threaded and slip receivers. Really nice people, too.

No intention of compeating with anything, grandpa just wants a very accurate gopher gun

Usually a good bolt action will be more accurate than a tricked out more expensive semi auto...

I can't get wi' Dennis on this one..... :)

A tricked out 10-22 is INCREDIBLY accurate for the money. Sooo bloody accurate than many folks are convinced that they're competitive with the big guns. Of course they're NOT, but then a big gun will start around 2500.00, the GUN, before you get a scope...

We've got closets full of 10-22's around here, the latest mod is the conversion to 17 MachII which in my opinion is the very pinnacle of rimfire accuracy.

It really bothers my mind that the American gun buying public will kill this fine cartridge in it's tracks in favor of the inferior HMR.

Al,
I took a used shot out medium weight barrel and installed a .17 liner and chambered it for the .17 Mach II. Fitted to my 77-22 without using the barrel clamp... it shoots great... what a superb little cartridge...
I highly recommend the .17 HM2...

Hey! Keep to the rules.

Either agree, or disagree. Backpeddling & seeing the other guy's point of view ain't fair.
