trick out 10-22

Somewhere along this line, I think maybe you were under the impession that the "Bentz" was a fit-all chamber reamer. It is in fact a match reamer. I used this on a number of 10-22 rifles I built and did not have a problem with them. I used shilen select match barrels, 16 twist and I threaded them and the receivers 7/8-14. It was scary how much better they shot than the original Reuger barrels with the clamp setup.

A long time ago, I had a discussion with a small barrel maker (production, not stature). about a tricked out 10-22 that he had built for himself. Somewhere in the conversation he mentioned that he had threaded the factory receiver, and at a later point, that given the strength of the alloy, and the fineness of the threads required, that after a certain number of rounds that his his experience was that the hammering of the relatively heavy breech blocks would cause the threads to stretch so that when the barrel was retightened the extractor slots would be out of alignment. I think that the number of shots was something like 12,000. In any case, I asked him how he planned on handling the problem on his own rifle, and he told me that he would fit it, and test it, and then epoxy the barrel in the receiver. When I asked him about whether this would make it difficult to change a barrel, he said that given the long life of .22 rimfire barrels, and how inexpensive 10-22s are, that if and when the time came, he would just buy another rifle, for its receiver. I believe that he said that he had done this before, with good results.

In another conversation with a name gunsmith, I asked him about how he did pressed and pinned rimfire barrels. He told me that because some of his customers' prone match barrels would need a slight set back from time to time, and because there were issues with putting pin grooves too close together on a shank, as well as sight drillings to preserve, that he epoxied the barrels in the receivers with good results.

Some time later, when a friend was having issues with an unreliable POI, with a high grade barrel that fit slightly less snug than the factory barrel (10-22, unthreaded), I I suggested that he glue it in. At first he declined, but later went ahead and did it, with the clamp. That solved his problem.

Another friend, who has a lathe and mill, and does his own gun work, has accurized a couple of 10-22s. A couple of things that seem to work are setting the barrel back slightly, to get the bullet closer into the rifling, and taking a light cut on the breech block face to slightly reduce the headspace. One time, he took a little too much off, and had an automatic fire malfunction at the range when he tested it. Needless to say, he increased the headspace a few thousandths. He also has good results from drilling the back of the barrel for an additional bedding screw, that is installed with its own pillar.

You can also Loctite the barrel in... no threads required, just a push in by hand fit and let it set up 6 hours... heat and a tough pull to get it apart...

My 77-17HM2 shown above is fitted with the barrel snug and I used the Ruger clamp as I am also going to fit a 22LR barrel with a match chamber... It will be my only switch barrel rifle...:D

Hey Dennis, that's some shooting, both........................

the rifle and the rifleman!

Kidd makes two receivers, a slip blue or silver, and the same in threaded, with or w/o the rail.
I spoke to an acquaintance that had one and he said that with the steel lips, or the drum, it was his favorite fun-gun. :D

Does anyone have experience with the "Extruder Gun" ??
I heard of it from an Australian, long before the HM2 came along (10-20 yrs ago....) it was a .17 barrel, where the throat was a severe taper from .22 to .17 and conventional .22s became elongated .17s !! I guess a 9" or better twist would be needed, and a LOCK-ING bolt, huh ???

A rifle which squeezes the bullet down to another diameter has been called a 'swager.'

As far as I know (I've only been privy to two, one a 22-20 and the other a 7.7 to 7mm) they don't produce any pressure to speak of.

I can't imagine swaging to have a very large effect on absolute pressure. It might though skeew the pressure curve a little, enough to make a semi-auto get hinky????

I'm guessing

Usually a good bolt action will be more accurate than a tricked out more expensive semi auto...

A great bolt action is more accurate, but not one merely good. We're tearing it up 'round here with Kidd Supergrades. Our match founders split the autoloaders out of Sporter class early this year. At first I thought it was too early as a couple of the bolt guns are shooting the same scores, but the autoloaders are shooting just a little better.

The best receiver that I know of is the TenX by Aleaddict on this forum. It is made to accept both the long 22mag and the 22lr. That could also be the 17HMR11 or the 17HMR. It is an 80% receiver. It has a place for front and rear receiver screws and is aluminum.

Now, there IS one guy who builds custom 10/22 receivers out of stainless for the Magnum and HMr, but I've lost his contact info.
