Lapua 222 Brass Question

Lapua .222 Brass Question

Lapua did not make .222 Rem or the "older" .223 Rem brass, both of which were subcontracted and marketed with their name. .222 Rem has not been provided by Lapua for years. They now sell only the new .223 Rem Match which is manufactured by them and is a superior product in all regards. .222 is not planned for production.

Lapua 222 Brass question

Peter,
Thanks for letting us know about the background on both the 223 Rem. and 222 Rem. Brass question. I can testify that the 223 Rem. "Match" brass is definetly superior to any other brand on the market. Being sub-contracted out years ago explains the difference between the older brass, and the current lots being produced by Lapua. However even the "Older Sub-contracted" 223 Rem. was pretty good brass,as I had 45-50 loadings on a box of 100,with only 4-5 that split necks after that many loadings. I literally wore out a 223 Rem. barrel with the older box of 100, after 4,600 rounds. The newer "Match" will take a hotter load of V.V. N 133, than the older brass, and the accuracy is better, although it has a thinner neck. I just use a smaller bushing size to get the same neck tension. I do hope that they plan to at least continue to carry 222 Rem brass, even if it is Sub-Contracted. I understand the laws of "Supply & Demand" but there`s a bunch of us out here that have 222 Rem. Rifles, and Lapua named brass is the only brand that I`ll buy. I won`t even have a rifle built unless I can use Lapua Brass as the Parent case. Thanks, Michael Kerwood,, Kodiak Alaska

Availability of 222

brass made by LAPUA is in the works. It will be ready by early next year.
Dobson, LAPUA has and is producing the 222 brass in their plant just as they have in the past. They stopped 2 years ago, but it is again coming. This information comes directly from the US Western distributor.

From the documentation I have (directly from the manufactuer - Lapua), Lapua has made 222 Rem brass. It is always disappointing to see mistakes from supposedly knowing sources surface on the internet.

share your information Joe

Peter is the canadian distributor of Lapua so he should know,

take a picture and post your information Joe then all will know,

222 Lapua Remington

Hello, Adam Braverman here. I am the Sales & Business Manager for Lapua and VihtaVuori in the USA. I would like to clear up some confusion for all.

First, the older production of .222 Remington brass from Lapua was not produced at the Lapua factory. It was an outsourced product and was discontinued prior to 2007. The quality and consistency of these cases were not up to Lapua standards.

Second, Lapua is now producing .222 Remington brass at the Lapua factory for introduction at the 2009 SHOT Show in Orlando. In the USA, these cases will be imported by Graf & Sons in Mexico, Missouri, and by Kaltron Outdoors in Bensonville, Illinois. In Canada, these cases will be imported by Hirsch Precision in Nova Scotia.

Have a great day!!

Adam - so are you saying that Lapua never produced any 222 Rem brass in their factory? Not one case until 2008?

Please talk with Janne Boström @ lapua..

Lapua 222 Brass question

Adam,
That`s great news to all of us that own rifles, chambered for cartridges that utilize 222 Rem. brass. As I stated earlier, I won`t even build a rifle unless it can use Lapua brass as the parent case. I`m sure there are lots of shooters who feel the same way,and have the same loyalty that I do to your company`s brass & other product line. While the 222 Rem. may not be growing in popularity as other calibers, I do appreciate that Lapua is willing to make an investment in starting production of this brass cartridge. It`s very easy to load a standard 222 Remington round, and the inherint accuracy it delievers is astounding, with very little tuning. The 6 PPC has replaced the 222 rem. as the more popular round used in Benchrest competition, however it takes more work & time to make the brass for it, from 220 Russian cases. Hopefully the trend in popularity will reverse for the casual shooters out there who are looking for accuracy without the work associated with the 6 PPC. There are lots of those not engaged in Benchrest competition, but are pursuing ways to achieve accuracy, in a more "Off the Shelf" atmosphere. For those looking at "Extreme Accuracy" with less investment in time & money, the Deuce is hard to beat. Having the best quality brass is an important part of accuracy chain, and the 45-50 loadings I got out a box of Lapua 223 Rem. brass makes it a cheaper long term investment. With Lapua making brass for this cartridge, I`ll bet that the popularity of the 222 Remington round will see a rise. Considering the rising cost of components, the 222 Remington delievers a lot of groups at a cheaper cost per shot, than other accurate rounds. Thanks for the good news about Lapua`s planned production for this great cartridge. I know my H/V & Heavy Bench Rifles have been collecting dust, due to a lack of quality brass. Mike Kerwood, Kodiak Alaska

Lapua .222 Brass Question

Thanks Adam. The important good news is that Lapua will have .222 Rem brass available, made by them.

They previously outsourced a few products, but do not do so at present.

Peter

It is amazing what people will post so to clear up the misconceptions. I am posting the latest response directly from Lapua - Janne Boström

Subject: Vs: Did Lapua ever make .222 Rem brass and what years?

Dear Mr Ponto

Those letters and numbers have nothing to do with the lot. Yes Lapua has made that case long time ago and then we have also used the cases produced by other factories in our company.

Yours sincerely
Janne Boström

PS. But we have not even sold that case for some years. And as said we are now planning to launch that case in the near future.

Clarification

I am sorry to have caused some confusion about the 222 Remington cases. In at least the past 15 years, .222 Remington cases have not been produced at the Lapua factory in Finland. However, beginning in 2009, Lapua will re-introduce the .222 Remington case produced by Lapua at the Lapua factory in Lapua, Finland.

Mr. Ponto, I appreciate your zeal in getting to the bottom of this.
