The best groups I have shot with my Savage .223 were with Ultramax 68gr. Hornady match reloads. About $25 for 50. Best 2 groups were .123 and .149. I haven't been able to achieve any .1s in my various reloads. Thus far, I've used Varget and 4198 powder, and Sierra MK 69gr. and some old 68gr. Noslers which aren't made anymore. The brl. has a 1-9 twist. Any fave loads of you .223 Savage shooters. BTW, I just bought some 68gr. Hornadys, but haven't reloaded for them yet. I sure would like to duplicate that Ultramax load.

try the sierra 53 gr match hollow point on top of 25 gr of h-322,might surprise you, mine loves the lighter bullets & puts them in the .1's consistantly for 3 shot groups at about 3400 fps over the chrony

53gr sierra Matchkings, 52gr Bergers or 52gr Fowler/Schieder bullets over 25.0grs of Vitvh N-133 in Lapua Brass, works in my Savage 12PLRV or Tikka T-3

.223 LRPV 1/9 loads.....

Mr. Dumas--I too have Savage LRPV .223 1/9. I have been looking for a load w/ N-133. Do you seat "jam, just, off the rifling" and by how much? I'm using neck turned Lapua(.0125"),F205's. I thought N-133 was a little "fast" for .223 as I use it in my 6PPC. Could you tell me what size groups @ 200yds you're getting. I'm trying for 1/2" or less @ 2. Thank you. gpoldblue:)

Gld blue Try 23.2gr N133 I've tried this with AA2015br Almost the same speed as N133.

Bob Try 23.1gr H4895 with 69gr smk 2.26"OAL CCI 200 Primers.

Thanks for the quick replies. I haven't tried any light bullets except the Rem. UMC 55grs I bought on sale at Bass Pro when I first bought the gun. Both Savage and Black Hills recommended the 68 to 75 gr. bullets for the 9-1 twist. I'll give the 52 SMKs a try.

Savage 10fp with some action work by Fred at Sharp shooter supply, and one of his competition triggers. I have had very good luck with 69gr sierra smk's with 25.5gr varget .005 off the lands...1/2 minute gun. It will dip into the .3's on occasion (especially when I am paying attention to the flags) but for the most part the groups shoot with boring regularity at the .5moa mark.
52gr Hornady BTHP with 23.5gr N133 or 26gr Varget shoot .8-1.2" at 200.
The 69gr SMK's have the edge in overall consistency in my rifle. I can keep it to .5-.75moa out to 550yds (the farthest I've shot thus far), and at 200yds I have shot it down to .5" but this is more rare.
Have also had fair luck with hornady 75gr A-max with 23.5-24gr varget. Not as consistent as the 69gr, but will average 1" at 200yds.
Hope this helps.

Savage 223

Bought a new Savage mdl. 10FP in August 2000, and over the years, and 2550 rds. tried a varity of recommended loads. The "winner" was always 24 to 25 grs. of Varget with the Sierra 69 gr. #1380, seated anywhere from .020" off the lands to touch, did not seem to matter. Barrel has just been replaced with a Hart 1-8, same contour, but now with a Bell & Carlson stock & a Zeiss 6.5-20x. The above load will be my "mid-range", ( 2 to 300 yd) combo. Recommended bullet weight, included with the paper work from Savage, was a 69gr., and they were absolutely correct for this rifle/barrel.

savage 223

I shoot a 69 gr MK. behind 24.4 gr of AA2230 and a CCI benchrest primer. I have used winchester brass and military brass and they both shoot in the high .1's and the low .2's. I have some lapua brass to load up and try next.

My gun does have some work done to it. It had an accurizing package done at savage gunsmithing and a trigger job. We also bedded the action. It is a fun gun to shoot and I am sure it would stay under .5 at 200 consistently.

My dad has the same gun and gun work done to it and it shoots just as well with the same load

try 73 grain Bergers

Hi I had good results from my 1:9 sSavage using 73 gr. Bergers and Varget and cci benchrest primers. Try between 24 to 25 grains of Varget.
I also had good luck with 55 gr Noslers BT with cci benchrest primers and benchmark powder around 26 grains and work up.

Try this 26.0 grains n-133 52 Eubers hard into the lands works for me

223lrpv

I got lucky with my savage it will shoot just about any thing as long as it is in to the lands hard. Best for me is 26g of varget and 70g berger vld. This thing will shoot in the ones with this load. I use rem brass 26g may not fit in better brass.

Savage LRPV 1:7 twist

Ausie mate if BM2 is Benchmark 2 from ADI Hodgdon Powders. Try 21.8gr

23.3gr with the 69gr smk and Fed 205m or CCI 400.

Giday DaRealViper,
Thanks for the advice, I'll certainly try your suggested loadings and wil keep you informed of the results.
As an aside, I'm developing a load using 80grn Sierra MatchKings using ADI AR2219 powder.
I went to the range today with the following results.
Case: Nosler
Powder: AR2219 21.5grns
Primer: Federal GM205M
Bullet seated 0.010 from rifling
Range: 100yds 5 Shot Group Size: 0.931 4 shots 0.309 ( 1st shot out of the group).
Same again but bullet seated .005 from rifling 5 shot Group Size: 0.655 4 shots 0.289 (once again 1st shot out of the group).
I'm going to try a fouler shot before I shoot a 5 shot group next time and I'm also going to try 0.0025 off the rifling. The 21.5grn load is not maximum and the average velocity is still under maximum with no sign obvious signs of excessive pressure.
Once again I'll shoot rhough the Chrony and keep a close eye on pressure signs.
THanks once again.

Another tip a SWAT sniper give me is clean your rifles. Fire 3 rounds and store them. When needed no foulers required 1 shot does the trick.

Not best for range rifles but critters in the outback or defense scenarios.

You must be reading my mind. I AM considering trying AR2219 (H322) on the lighter projectiles; especially now since your getting "nice" results at 200yds with the 55grn.

Thanks for the info mate; I really aprciate it!

Real nice groups at 200yds-----

:)DaDaRealViper----- I have a Savage LRPV,.223Rem,1/9. If I may ask, what size are your AVERAGE 200yd groups and are they 3 shot or 5 shot groups. Thank you very much. I appreciate your article. gpoldblue
