Can a Remington 7mmMag bolt face be bushed to 30-06?

I was wondering if a Remington 7mmMag bolt face could be bushed-up to reliably work with a 30-06 case? I currentyly own a Remington 7mmMag rifle which would suit me fine if I could get the bolt to work with the 30-06 case.

I intend to have my smith do the job, if it's something that is a common enough procedure.

Anything can be done. But that doesn't mean it's practicle. The ejector plunger would be too high, and of course, the extractor would dissappear. I don't have a clue as to how you would use a regular Rmington Extractor, which means going the Sako route, which I do not think is a good idea.
Not a good idea.

EDIT; Thanks for the input Jackie, I was busy posting this reply to milgunsmith at the same time you were posting your reply.

Is it really so involved to do that to a bolt so that a new LA stainless steel bolt would cost less? (as if Remington bolts are even available anywhere!) Can you explain?

Not to be argumentative, it's just that in making your comment you provided no input about the detail, difficulties, or cost involved.

They are letting bolts be sold on ebay again, might look there. Also, I think PTG sells them if you want a new one.

It would be very involved to convert a factory 700 magnum bolt face to a 30-06 size and utilize a factory 700 extractor. I would not even do it for myself let alone quote a price for someone...

The magnum nose would need to be turned to accept a bushing, the bushing would have to be silver soldered in place, the bushing would have to be machined to accept an extractor, the new extractor would have to be riveted in place, then it would have to be broken out (it wasn't quite right and did not work) and some more machining done and another extractor riveted in... and if all is well this time it was correct...

I did two bolts from .222 to .308 many years ago and will never do another...

Thanks Dennis. That was an in depth reply so now I understand the scope of it and just how involving this could be.

This was the entire length of the Email reply to me from my gunsmith; Yes I can make it work, no problem at all.
I'm going to have to see if he can grant me a couple of minutes of time on the phone with him so I might get a better idea of just what it was he was planning. Unless my smith knows a trick or something that you don't know, (ie; like completely swapping the bolt out with a spare) I think this sounds like something that is best avoided.

Thanks too kansas for the tip. I'll keep a periodic eye out at Ebay.

He is not referring to using an original 700 extractor system I am sure...

He is probably referring to installing only part of the Sako extractor system... with no safety protection if a case fails..

Funny thing here, the new Tikka rifle has a Sako extractor AND no guide rail

I would guess it is just a matter of time... I wish I had the money to blow one up...

Just got off the phone with Remington. They will sell me a bolt if I send the rifle in to their shop. That's ok, because the price is reasonable. But, if I send them my 7mm Mag rifle, they will only install a 7mmMag bolt! (yes, I understand their stand-point) And NOBODY ANYWHERE sells a stainless steel bolt. (never mind that I wouldn't want just any crude finished SPS style bolt)

I feel like Bob Dole in that old viagra commercial..... when he stares into the camera and says in a frustrated tone "I just can't win".

VaniB,
Just call Dave Kiff at PTG they sell Remington replacement bolts in stainless. Then send it to Dan Armstrong to time and tig the handle. Dave will grind you one any dia. you want. We use both of these guys all the time, Both do top drawer work at a reasonable price

And get the bolt from PTG with the Remington style extractor...

and then make sure any action truing is done first so the measurements you send to Dan for timing will not change...

PT&G sells one piece stainless bolts that are milled from a solid piece of stock so the handle is not a separate piece, $197. You can select options as well, rem extractor for LA .484, specific OD, fluting etc. Tac bolt knobs are $9, ejector kits are $8 and they sell rem style extractors for $8.75 IIRC

Why not shim the back side of the magnum extractor like we do with .308 size extractors used for PPC size cases that are short on grip in some Rem. 700 actions, simple easy $5 fix...............Don

Don, you probably don't sweat in a bushing, right? .308 & PPC can share the same boltface. Taking a magnum down to an '06 would be a different story.

But a 7.5x54 Swiss has about the capacity of a .30/06, and a .500 case head -- that might work.

Hi Charles, what is the diameter difference between 30/06 and 7mm mag. case rims?.......Don

About .060".

Belted case has about .532 rim diameter.

That still should be do-able I believe, .025-.030" silver soldered shimming between extractor ring and bolt nose recess should easily do the job, Ive done .020" shimming for .308-PPC Rem. extractors with no problem without rebushing.

If shimming didnt work for whatever reason I would go to option#2 and silver solder a .025-.030" spring steel "claw" extension to the Rem. extractor claw area.................Don

Over the weekend I located a new and unfired early 1990's SS Remington 700 LA rifle for $500. Thank goodness!......as I really didn't want to have to pay about $400 alone just to have had a custom ss bolt made up.

Thanks though for the good input, as I prefer stainless steel barreled actions for my projectsd, and it's it's helpfull to know that Pacific can supply it in the future if needed. This thread also educated and informed me of the deficiencies of a sako extractor style conversion. Good to kow....as I think my smith was getting ready to do it to me....errr.....do it to the bolt.
