    Practice versus match ammo.

The above, for a newbie (our OP), sheds more light on testing ammo. For others, that seriously shoot sanctioned RFBR matches, the above post is not breaking news. Since the OP has not stated his goals, or type, of RFBR matches he intends on shooting, I kept my original post to speak to the...

    Practice versus match ammo.

As many have posted, shoot the ammo in practice that you would shoot in a match. To find that ammo, you must test in the best conditions you can. You should shoot groups, and when you find a lot, not BRAND, that shoots good/best, you also need to shoot a card or several. You could refine this...

Scott Albury Shoots a 200 ABRA Indoor

Thanks Ron, I did travel the furthest, but the matches were only part of the equation. I went to Fresno 2 times in Jan. I planned both trips on tournament (6 card) dates and won the first one. The other reason was to test indoors for the upcoming outdoor season and to get some experience at 50yd...

Jim Starr Shoots Two 200 Cards ABRA Fresno Indoor State Tournament

Jim was on fire that night with wins in two classes! Conditions were pretty rough with heavy mirage. Congrats to him on a great night. His 'Cowboy Beans' he brought for everyone to enjoy was a winner as well.

Do you coat your barrel after cleaning and before shooting the first shot ?

To answer the OP's question, I clean then dry patch and shoot the barrel dry. Lead for a dedicated RFBR competitor is less likely an issue than carbon fouling, IMO. I have have seen lead when bore scoping, but rarely. While lead is usually seen in the area just ahead of the leade, I have seen...

    Scope for 100-400yds Groups

mbruce, while I do not shoot centerfire benchrest yet (gonna get my feet wet in a non-sanctioned class next spring), I do have experience with the 10-50x60 Sightrons. I owned 2 of them and sold both in the $$ range that's been previously posted here. They are a lot of scope for the money, but do...

    What are you looking at.....

11 year old thread resurrected. A good one to bring back at that. Shooting heads up definitely has it's place. Not comfortable for everyone, but when conditions don't hold and bench and equipment are up to it, you will put more in the center by using it. I particularly liked seeing posts from...

    Position Rifle Smith

I can say after visiting Mark's shop several weekends ago, he is set up really well. He only does rifles these days, and very fine rifles at that. The first ARA match in Indianan this month had 4 Penrod rifles in the top five out of 14 shooters. The top 3 were all shooting Penrod rifles.

    Eley 07100?

Amen to this comment. I go to the range and shoot my comp rifles, but it's not for practice. Testing and tuning equipment reasons only. A better use of ammo expenditure is shooting lots of sighters during a card for score. JMO, better results for your ammo $$'s when it really counts.

    Position Rifle Smith

Try Mark Penrod at Penrod Precision Rifles. I know he did work on a position rifle for a recent NCAA record holder. Don't know if it was an Annie, but do know he has the tooling and has done many Annie's in the past. Use your search bar for 'Penrod Precision' and you will find contact phone...

    New IR50/50 Matches

First off, $5 a target is a normal fee where I shoot, both ARA and IR. I would see no 'increase' there. Second, $5k would barely, if it would at all, cover the cost of one of my rifles with scope, never mind all the associated equipment along with it to shoot a match. Then I would 'speed' away...

    Eley Ammo Testing

Yes, both tuning and lot testing Tenex, as Tim mentioned. Eley does not allow Dan to test anything but Tenex. Last I knew, barrel tuning a rifle had a cost of $200. Well worth it when it comes down to ammo cost, computer measured results, indoor benign conditions and a printout of the results...

    short barrels

John, Tim pretty much said it with "if the blank allows". A custom rifle being built with a barrel blank of any quality at all, will have a tapered bore in it created by hand lapping it before it is shipped. The 'more' constriction end should be towards the muzzle, normally. A good smith that...

    Question on barrel cleaning

The above, in all of the sanctioned matches I have shot over the last 3 years, is mostly true. Cleaning threads are a dime a dozen, but there are new guys coming all the time (hopefully), and a revisit now and again is relevant. The best advise I have heard on the forums and from top ranked...

    First meters match....a question

Hawkeye, I did trust my sighters and things did not work out today. As you know from shooting with me in the past, some days I'm really on, others.....not so much. It was a 'not so much' day today. I did have fun though, and as always, learned some new things. Meters tomorrow and another...
