    8x57 J vs JS

I know that. That was the point of considering an 8x57 J in the first place.

New (1965)model winchester m70 heavy barrel target still in box

Well, being as it's one of the first post-64 Model 70's, it's probably ugly as homemade sin, with pressed checkering on a club-like stock and a dull parkerized-looking finish on the receiver. No insult meant, because that being said, I had a heavy barrel .225 of the same vintage that I bought...

Also, see the article by Lee Euber in the post by abintx here: http://benchrest.com/archive/index.php/t-50979.html Might be helpful getting in the ballpark.

    8x57 J vs JS

I also have just such a 94 .32 Special. Mine was made in 1946, I think. It wears a pristine cut-rifled barrel and a receiver sight. I agree about the advantage of a scope for older eyes, but for sneaking around in the middle part of the day, I want something light and handy with a big open...

    8x57 J vs JS

I think both the J and JS are fine, versatile cartridges. Truth be told, I may never need to take a shot longer than 100 yards on deer ever again, judging from where I hunt. I would be just fine with a 30-30, so there's no need to be snobbish about other capable cartridges.

    8x57 J vs JS

Well, I may be going in a different direction here. I looked at one of the rifles in question that is up for auction. The scope reticle is canted to the right and seems odd to me when brought to the shoulder. In conventional rings, it of course is no problem to loosen the ring screws and turn...

    8x57 J vs JS

I'm considering several rifles marked 8x57 J. I am aware that this is the earlier version of the 8mm Mauser with the .318 bore. The JS is the "modern" version with the .323 bore. I can find no company that sells to the U.S. market that sells ammo for the 8x57 J, so this will be a handloading...

    Winchester 1892: new barrel options?

"Rimfire benchrest" might not be the best category for this question. I would look for a different site that specializes in old Winchester lever guns, or at least put the question in the "Factory/Hybrid Rifle" category of this site. I checked gunpartscorp.com and they don't have any barrels in...

What brand of stocks are these??

The top stock is indeed for a 40X .22 rifle. They can be bought all day long on ebay for $100 or less. The other two look like early HS Precision stocks for the same rifle. If I were selling them, I'd put them all on ebay for a starting price of $50 each with no reserve. See what the market...

    A Feel-Good Story

That was a very nice thing for you and your wife to do. So many sacrificed their lives and their families sacrificed as well. I can't imagine growing up without my Dad since age 6.

    Gun case foam!

Wally-world mattress pad foam with the dimples has always worked fine for me, even when in the case for several days. I always put in plenty of moisture-absorbing packets with the guns.

Things You Should Avoid Doing When You Are Over 70.

And don't forget to ask for your senior discount. In NH, if you're 68 or over when you buy your license, it's only seven dollars for combination hunting and fishing. Muzzle-loader and archery are another three dollars each. I'm 68 and I'm just now getting used to asking for senior discounts.

For The Traveling Gunsmith To Have On Hand

Would have liked to become a master machinist, but that era had mostly passed when I got into it. Unions did not want you to learn more than one machine, because that meant less total people in the work force and thus less union membership.

    Yet Another Cool Old Rifle

When I lived in Springfield right after college, I attended several friends wedding receptions there. Very fancy. I also had a tennis membership on their clay courts for a few years. Did you ever get to look through Governor Hartness' old telescope (the house was orginally his mansion)? You...

    Yet Another Cool Old Rifle

The Springfield (VT) library has some of Porter's drawings, and some interesting pictures of the Mt. Palomar telescope that he worked on. He was also an arctic explorer. Springfield was one of the preeminent machine tool towns in the nation, with three icons of the industry. We had Fellows Gear...

    Yet Another Cool Old Rifle

The 4X Redfield on the M-S is a TV view and is near mint. I have another minty 2-7X TV view on an M98 30-06 witih a 20 inch barrel. It was built by Creighton Audette of Springfield, VT from a pristine action with Nazi proof marks. It wears a full length stock with fancy checkering and full...

    Yet Another Cool Old Rifle

I've been playing with a late-fifties vintage Mannlicher-Schoenaur full-stock carbine in .243 Winchester. It currently wears an older Redfield 4 power scope and seems plenty accurate. I'll be hunting with Hornady 100 grain round nose Interlocks (discontinued) at a bit over 2800 fps. I want to...

    Bullet weld?

I shot on the same bench as Lee Euber today. I never thought to ask him about pistol powder in a rifle case. Darn! I do not think that the five loads that preceded the catastrophe were light. I think the last one might well have been due to some weird circumstance. To me that is far more likely...

    Bullet weld?

And my high school friend who saw his .264 Win. Mag barrel go end-over-end down range makes 4. The action split right at the bridge where the threads are. He was working on reduced loads, and he kept going lower and lower, until.......BLAM! Should have read the manual.

    Bullet weld?

Sounds very plausible, Al. I'd rank it equal to my low powder charge theory. I KNOW that can blow up rifles because it happened to a friend. Same exact result as this one. I discount the pistol powder theory. I know of a case where a guy used reloading gear that belonged to his girlfriend's ex...
