    remington actions

I like Remington 700 actions a lot, although for some reason all mine have been short actions. I like the model 7 as well. It's probably more of a style thing than a function thing. Maybe 15 years ago I was in the market for a model 7 stainlss synthetic in .308. A friend said a friend of his...

    "Stalking Rifles"

The .308 is the most numerous chambering in my collection. I like it for many reasons. I have shot more deer with it than anything else, with the .30-06 probably being second. One classic stalking rifle that most folks are not aware of is the Savage model 20, later renamed the model 1920. It...

    "Stalking Rifles"

I can't argue with that one. Merkel makes a nice example and Blaser has some incredible examples for big dollars. The wood is amazing. My new (to me) mauser in 6.5x54 MS is very near to the lines of the classic Rigby. How it ended up in that caliber I would love to know. There are no maker marks...

    Christmas

I got a Rifle-Basix trigger and 100 new pieces of brass for my .222. I also got a newly repaired back so I can walk again without pain. Thank god for modern medicine. I also had a wonderful meal cooked by my lovely wife. She cooked a turkey breast upside-down and it was the moistest most...

    Body Die with Lee Collet

So, can you use the collet and then the body die? If you use the collet first, it will eject the spent primer, which may be a bit proud of the case, otherwise affecting the shoulder bump. Or, do you just use a decapping die, then the body die, then the collet? Thanks, and Merry Christmas.

    "Stalking Rifles"

Some stunning technical and artistic virtuosity there! A magnificent demonstration of the possible. I'd be afraid to touch one, however.

    "Stalking Rifles"

Leave it to Al to think outside the box. I don't see a red deer being much impressed with that however.

    "Stalking Rifles"

The main prickly thing we have up here in New England is a blackberry thicket. They are generally easy enough to avoid but in some cut over areas they take over. I don't enjoy stepping over logging slash, which is why I don't hunt Maine any longer. Northern NH is a bit better in that respect...

    "Stalking Rifles"

I'm not a fan of running shots, and I've certainly spent a large amount of time in blinds and tree stands. However, it's a great thrill just to be creeping along and spot deer before they spot me. If it results in a shot, so much the better. Watching for bits of deer at the edge of the visible...

    Body Die with Lee Collet

OK, the second part of my question got lost in the shuffle in the "Mandrel vs. Bushing" thread. I have been planning on some of my (less precise) rifles to use body dies in conjunction with Lee collet dies, just bumping the shoulders and then using the collets on the necks. I am talking about...

    "Stalking Rifles"

Well, didn't mean to pigeon-hole you Al, I just hoped I wasn't getting too far afield. I think style enters into it, but a '94 Winchester could qualify as a stalking rifle if that's your style. I don't know if a .30-06 is too large, but I'll opine that a .25-06 is not. Flat shooting but not too...

    "Stalking Rifles"

I realize that Alinwa likes to emphasize that this is primarily a benchrest site, and I appreciate most of his technical opinions. However, like many who converse on this site, and like the gun writer Terry Weiland, I am interested in just about anything that shoots. One category of firearm...

Mandrel v bushing dies on case necks?

Getting a little confused! So, should I be investing in inside case neck turning tools as well as outside? And if I do, how to keep the insides of the necks concentric with the outsides? For my benchrest rifles, and some others, I size with Redding type-S bushing dies. I have not had donut...

    An off topic question....

I do the edges of deer horn plaques with a router bit in a drill press. Not the smoothest cut, but easier than doing the whole thing with a rat-tail rasp. It cleans up pretty quick though.

    Post '64 Win Model 70

No, I have also seen several of these Model 70 XTR's and have been impressed. If I found one in a caliber I don't have (doubtful) I would likely buy it. I think I'll go look on Gunbroker now. I also have a Model 70 Shadow in .300 WSM and it is a very nice rifle (once I scraped the plastic goop...

    friggin' awesome

I upgraded two Windows 7 PCs to Windows 10 a couple of years ago and found it to be quite easy. It was free too! I liked XP but learned to love Windows 7. Now I like Windows 10 just fine.

    friggin' awesome

Finally bought a Teslong I've been mulling over Al's recommendation since August. Finally, with Christmas around the corner, I got on Amazon and ordered the thing. I just now plugged it in and tried it. Al is right! I thought the brochure was a bit misleading as I couldn't follow the...

    pumpkin pie

Never a big pumpkin pie fan, but she made it, so we're gonna eat it. Needed to have something to make it go down easy, so this afternoon I went down to the general store for some vanilla ice cream. All they had in vanilla was half gallons. That should get me through most of the pie.

    Who cleans to bare metal?

I clean to bare metal practically every time in all my rifles except a few hunting rifles with alligator skin in the throat. I just do it because it's easy with Wipeout, and because I'm anal. Never mind that I never win any matches. I remember maybe 15 years ago that Rick Jamison had two...
