Me and my buddy want to attend, at minimum, some matches this year. Anyone know of something near for us to check out. We have never been to anything of the sort, but love to shoot anything, anytime, anywhere and are looking at maybe competing. We dont have any bench rifles or anything like that but thought about hunter class. Please get me started and I will be absolutly addicted I'm sure. ---Ernie in WI

'Morning, Ernie. There are two great venues for BR shooting in Wi. at present.

One is the Holmen Rod and Gun Club just a few minutes north of LaCrosse. They host resistered IBS Hunter and Varmint for Score tournaments. The Homen range is undergoing major renovations this season including moving their 200 yd. target locations so won't be hosting any events this season as work continues. There will continue to be IR 50/50 Rimfire BR events throughout construction as well as many other events. Here's their web site with contact info and general info about the range:

Just a wee bit south of Oshkosh is the Van Dyne Sportsmans Club range. They hold registered NBRSA Hunter events and each July host the Wi. State Hunter Championships which has become one of the premier 'must attend' events for all Hunter competitors.

Both of these ranges are challenging to shoot and run by people that will help a new competitor in any way. Hope to see you there! -Al

Ernie. Just go and watch. Take a notepad. See what people have. You will save some money. I started out all wrong. Bought factory. Thought I could deal with it. But, after seeing a real Benchrest match and Real Benchrest guns.....
While you are waiting for the Spring thaw. Here is some reading material.
Mike Ratigan's book

and The Benchrest Shooting Primer

These have it all.
Oh, and after the match. I am sure some of the guys will let you shoot.
Benchrest have some of the nicest people.

If you are knowledgable about loading, ect for a benchrest gun (tight neck chamber, ect.) check the classifeds ads here or go to shooters corner and start off with a used gun.

Ernie, Some local clubs around the Pittsville WI area hold some local shoots thru the year. Some egg shoots out to 300 yards, and some cold bore long range shoots from anywhere between 500-880 yards.

You can call me at the shop and I will put you on the call list when they come up.

Ernie,
You are very close to the Winnequah gun club outside Lodi. I am not sure what they do for Benchrest, but they run several Long Range/F-class and Highpower matches each year including the week long Midwest Palma. Lots of fun and very challenging. I think they have an indoor range now as well.

Also check out the Wisconsin Rifle and Pistol Club site for other events.

My club does a few rimfire matches but no center fire Benchrest.
