From what I have seen, a well tuned 30BR has about the same agging capability as a 6PPC. I doubt you can say the same, (at this time), about any 6.5.
The big factor here is the bullets. Some of the finest bullets being made are in 30 caliber. Several of our top bullet makers, BIB, Cheeks, Knight, (to name a few), are making 30 caliber bullets in the 110 grn to 130 grn range that have true sub .200 agging capability at 100 through 300 yards. Coming out of a slow twist barrel, in the 1-17 range, and in the hands of a good condition reader, these things are deadly.
The 6.5 is sort of stuck in "purgotory" when it comes to short range Benchrest. It won't quite hold up against the hot 22's and 6mm's in group shooting, and it doesn't punch that big hole in the paper like the 30 does in score shooting.
That is not to say the 6.5 isn't far behind. It has just about taken over the long range game, where other aspecs, such as BC and down range ballistics play a part. But at this time, the edge would have to go to the 30 at the shorter ranges, where overall agging capability still trumps everything..........jackie

6.5 For Br

I agree with everything Jackie said in his reply. I have been playing with the 6.5 BR for a number of years now and have run up against a dead end because of the lack of good jackets in the proper langth. I will say it again and as often as I can: MR. BERGER, WE NEED J-4 JACKETS IN 6.5 BY .920 LENGTH, PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Larry, does this mean that yer gettin' tired of pinching-off those 1.300 INCHERS?!?

From our expiriments, this is exactly what Roy Oines and I found - for 'traditional' BR (300 & < Yds) we needed GOOD jackets between .about .820 and .920" long. For the 6.5 and a tangent, 8 caliber ogive, making a weight/length of the "same" digits makes a decent bullet: i.e., .820" long jacket makes a dandy 82 Gr. bullet; and .920" a good 92 Gr. bullet - for the interested, these aren't carved in stone: +/- weight combinations, using jackets "trimmed" to these lengths, made great shootin bullets too! :D RG
