I think I'd actually prefer a root canal to this.

50 holes finish reamed to 223. It's a chamber gauge for an ammunition company. (multiply by three)

The world does not contain enough Mojito mix.

Case Gauge

I'd say Blackhills Ammunition will be dropping 50 rounds at a time into the block. Nice work.

It's a cartridge/chamber gauge.

Take a box of 50 rounds, dump it into the block and if all is well every case rim will sit flush with the deck surface. Then plop them back into the packaging and move onto the next one.

I've run into some issues. My coolant isn't slimy enough. I've broken two reamers now. Something I haven't done in a long, long time. I'm going to be making a manifold that will pressurize coolant/cutting fluid from the bottom of the holes. I have a coolant pump in my storage unit that'll develop about 2500lbs of pressure. That should surely make a huge mess in the shop!

David Kiff is going to have a great month at the rate I'm eating tooling right now. Grrrrrrrrr!

Experience never comes cheap. . .

Would not a near-full size drill operation prior the the finish reamer cut solve the problem of broken/worn finish reamers?

Alot easier/cheaper to replace twist drills than finish reamers.........Don

you might want to look at using one of them JGS three flute twist rougher. I used one that the customer supplied a while back and it cut like a twist drill. It might save you some time and money over making some tooling for a one time job.

Wellz, here's what I did.

Making a manifold to pressurize coolant through my holes from the bottom side.

Next I've written each hole as a tapered thread with a .0025" pitch and I'm going to use an endmill to machine the case taper minus .005" on both sides.

I was hesitant at first on doing this for fears of loading too much tool at once, but after thinking it over I believe this is what I actually want. Right now I'm only loading the shoulder and the torsion is what's eating reamers. That and I think my coolant is still to "lean". I plan to fatten it up to at least 10% before I try again.

So, we'll see. I have another reamer on the way from PTG. It'll be a day or two before it shows up.

Fun stuff.

Chad it sounds like you've got it sorted out mate. In my experience reaming is only ever sucessfull as a "finishing" operation. Roughing the holes with a 20 thow radius carbide endmill should work perfectly and greatly reduce the work and load on the reamer. I have often negated the use of coolant when reaming in favor of hand applied cutting oil, but for so many holes i can see why you are persevering with increased % coolant.
I also wondered why the gauge is made from steel rather than say free machining grade of alloy? Would be much easier to machine and once hard anodised would still offer a good lifespan, but of course the customer wants what the customer wants and often they know better than us machinists eh?:rolleyes:

Ps
I've seen a number of your posts and i realy like your work!

Cheers

Tooling "aint cheap either"

Chad:

I had a job drilling 2500 3/32" holes .25" deep through drill bits that were rockwell 60-65. I did not have plunge EDM. They all were drilled with carbide end mills that were about $8.00 each. I feel your pain.

A few updates.

Revised a couple things and it appears to be progressing nicely now. To the point that I allowed myself to run one "lights out" last night. It's a good feeling when you come to work the next day and the tools are still in the appropriate holders and not buried in a piece of stock material.

One down, two to go. Reamer is holding up extremely well. Gotta love Dave Kiff!! I keep reminding myself that what I'm doing is basically chambering 150 rifles!

Cheers,

C

Not odd, just two threads by the same guy in two completely different forums.

I'm LR inc. in some and NesikaChad in others. The reason for this is (one) I was a member here prior to going out on my own so I'll just keep the old name. Two I'm not a sponsor so announcing my business name to the masses every time I post is a bit tacky and it offends others who are paying contributors- and the owners of the forum as well.

Some forums don't care so I do use my business name there.
