Twist for a 6BR

It's been a very long time since I last posted or visited the site. I am looking to re-barrel my Model 22 V Cooper to a 6BR. My question is what do I sacrifice by going to a 1-10 twist versus going with a 1-13.750 twist.

I like to shoot the Cooper One shot which 150yds, but would like to shoot some 500-600yd shoots as well. I have a buddy who is shooting a 1-14 using Ronnie Cheek bullets and loves them. If I go to a 1-10 will I lose much on the accuracy that the lighter Cheek bullets give?

Also do I loose much on the throat by using the heavier bullets?

Thanks

Jim

My attitude concerning a 6BR is you set it up for one of two, venues. Either short range, (100-200-300), which means a 1-13 to 1-14 twist. Or, long range, (300 on out), which means 1-7 1/2 to 1-8 twist.

Anything else is a compromise.

In a factory rifle...even a Cooper...I do not think you'll see any difference in accuracy shooting a 6BR. While some will be adamant about proper twist rate for best accuracy, I see it as a crumb on the table that is well down the list of most important factors. Even in a full blown and top of the line br rig, I doubt you'll see much difference. That said, it doesn't take much difference to move you from 1st place to an also ran in competition shooting. A few thou is quite a bit. So, if you plan to compete, it matters...as does virtually everything. For a very fine varmint rig or even a rig to out shoot your buddies, forget about it. The faster twist has more pro's than cons in this type of rifle. You can shoot 60 to 95 gr bullets very well from a 10 twist 6BR.

If you want to split that hair, twist rate is more critical to accuracy in a larger caliber than it is in smaller ones.

As to the second part of your question...due to it's fairly long neck, the 6BR is pretty forgiving to various weight bullets. With a 10 twist, I'd throat it for the longest bullet you plan to shoot. About .080" freebore would be very good for bullets up to about 95 grains and will still work well with most light bullets.

Whatever "game" you choose mostly, barrel your rifle for that game. Then, just take your lumps when involved in something that's a bit off base for the choice you made. Keep in mind that you can have two barrels. :)
