Trying to find the best seating depth.

I looked at the link and what you posted and I'm a little confused. If 2.800 is touching, then 2.815 should be .015" jam(?) and 2.805 s/b .005" jam. Then you went to a jump of .040" and .080" and an increase of 8.6% powder. That left a lot of room in between where I think you'll find some good groups. I seem to have my best results with a .010 - .015" jump and work my powder up in 1% increments. The 2.815" (jammed) may work best for you, try different charges at that length. The only reason I jump more than .015" is if I'm restricted by magazine length. - nhk

I agree with the previous post that there are some good groups in the charges you skipped. I have found the sweet spot for many 6 BR barrels using Varget between 30 and 30.8 grs. . Find a good charge then start tweaking the seating depth and if you need to fine tune the load some after finding the best seating depth you can but it won't be by much.

Seems that what you really WANTED, was a jam...
Hope you captured the jammed velocity.

But maybe you could give jumping a better effort next time. ya never know

I went to the jump trying to find what Berger says is a good starting place, but I have always gotten better groups touching with less powder. I got up to 31.5 grains to increase the velocity for shooting at 1,000 yds. I think that my groups increased in size because I was using to much powder for "MY" rifle. The best group it has ever shot at 100 yds was a .084" for 5 shots. What I should have done was to keep some where around 29 + or - grains and worked on increasing the jam. This is what I am going to do now. I have 50 empty cases that were just trimmed. I have another 50 that have 31.5 grs. which I will break down and trim then start again.

If I can get it shooting consistently under 1/2" at 200 yds. again I think I can get my groups under 6 inches at 1,000. I have only shot twice at 1,000 and it is very addictive. Can't wait for them to clear about 75 yds. of trees so we can extend the 1,000 to 1,760. I guess when that happens I hope all I'll need is a new barrel and another set of dies and bullets & bigger cases. I have the powder and primers.

Oh, I'll have to take some pictures of the shooting benches we have and post them here. The tops are made of 6" or thicker slabs of polished granite. In fact almost everything out there is made out of granite or marble.

PS: Thanks for the advice guys. It is a never ending quest.

nhkuehl,

You were confused about me increasing the powder as I jumped. I think I was more confused then you are. I had them loaded already and just seated them deeper to save time. DUH, next time I will screw my head on before I start.
