Truing a barrel nut

Rob,
You donèt (Oh crap! My computer has turned French again!) want to use a tapered thread nor do you want to depend on the fit of the nut on the mandrel for chucking purposes. It is possible to make a gauge to check thread alignment and the perpendicularity (is that even a wordÉ) of the face but, by the time you have done so, you might just as well have made another nut. An expandable threaded mandrel can work just fine providing the contact is on the slope of the thread face and not on the top or root (especially an a Savage piece).
If you want a precision nut, make a new one. Regards, Bill
