This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine. My rifle is my best friend. It is my life. I must master it as I master my life. My rifle, without me, is useless.

Without my rifle, I am useless. I must fire my rifle true. I must shoot straighter than any enemy who is trying to kill me. I must shoot him before he shoots me. I will....

My rifle and myself know that what counts in this war is not the rounds we fire, the noise of our burst, nor the smoke we make. We know that it is the hits that count. We will hit...

My rifle is human, even as I, because it is my life. Thus, I will learn it as a brother. I will learn its weakness, its strength, its parts, its accessories, its sights and its barrel. I will keep my rifle clean and ready, even as I am clean and ready. We will become part of each other. We will...

Before God I swear this creed. My rifle and myself are the defenders of my country. We are the masters of our enemy. We are the saviors of my life. So be it, until victory is America's and there is no enemy, but Peace.

This is a picture of my son on the far left with gunny R. Lee Ermy, gunny James Mozingo and PFC Thomas Mains.
The pic was taken at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. They were filming an episode of Mail Call. Ermy recieved permission from the base commander to take a few of the Marines out for dinner that evening. He also got a framed and autographed picture. It made my son's day.

Yep, that sure looks like Ft. Sill in the background. But what I wonder is what are the Marines doing at a U.S. Army artillery base?

Dragon fire, various rocket propelled assault items ect, training in use of tools, ours and thiers.

When I was in artillery school back in the mid 70's my gunnery instructor was a marine gunny.
BTW, the army has "posts" and forts. The navy, marine and air force have bases.

Marines have Camps too as in Camp Lejeune and Camp Pendleton.

In the Navy there called Stations as in Mayport Naval Station or Naval Air Station Jacksonville ect.........

The Marine Rifleman's Creed, though it sounds quaint to you now, at Parris Island in 1969 it was taken quite seriously.

They still took it plenty serious at MCRD San Diego in 1986!

jamie

They took it a LOT more serious in '51. Stupid wars. 38,000 dead young men and 58 years later, we still have 50,000 guys over there. Korea....that is.

Talk like that today could result in a psychiatric record that won't allow you to own a rifle at all.
