Bolt work

OMHO.....when doing work on anything wanting both ends/bores to be in line... i.e. barrels thru the headstock/steady rest...... why would you not want to indicate or set up the bolt in the same way....???? ...indicating both ends ....????.. so... if you document the bolt is being held straight with an indicator ran transversely with the carriage.... in 3 axis`s.... you would be o.k...... if not.... use a steady rest..... and indicate back end of bolt body....
Let the flames begin....

Using a steady rest is how I do most of my bolt work. I drive the bolt from a chucked threaded stud then since my steadyrest has rollers I ride them just behind the lugs on the bolt body. Some fluted bolts only have a small amount of unfluted to run the rollers on.

Jerry, I haven't tried an action in some time, but but I do bolt in the same manner as you.

X3 on the steady! I have a driver that is appx 1.250 that screws in the back of the bolt, believe it's 1/2 13 tpi. I chuck the bolt up, true the driver, then turn it around and run it in the steady.

Anyone have a action mandrel and bushings they want to sell? Preferably a Manson set for Remington 700
