Im planning on a prariedog trip & theres no where in southern Louisiana to shoot 1000 yds. Im shooting a 6.5x284 , 140 gr. sierra @ 2950. Sierra says that a 100 yd . zero will get 274" fall @ a 1000 . My thinking is I need to be 27.4 " high @ 100 . Am I thinkin right. If not Someone help please. I at least want to be in the ball park.

Your pretty close. I ran the numbers through a ballistic program and got 278-287, depending on how high your sight is above the barrel. Of course the temp and humidity will also have an effect.

I'm not sure what weather parameters you're using but my Sierra ballistics says that the total drop on that bullet is 328". Also for a sight height of 1.8" (usually pretty close) the bullet path at 100 is 29.1" above point of aim.

Exbal suggests a 140smk traveling at 2950 with 100 yard zero 1.5 sight ht above the bore is 28 moa at 1000 yards with a trajectory value in elevation of 293.6 inches and 327.7 drop from line of sight.
hope it helps

You get up into dawg country and she's gonna' flatten out a few clicks too.......If you're missing, start by presuming you're shooting OVER them, not under.......

You're gonna' end up clicking in to about 200yds and start walking out with a spotter anyway ;) you'll learn more on this trip than you'd ever imagine! Wrap tape around your knob or write the stuff right on your flipup cuz it's hard to remember let alone figger when there's stuff barkin' and scurryin' and postin' out as far as you can see!

ENJOY!!!! :):):)

Don't forget to let 'em cool down or you'll feel like you're coming home from Vegas when you're done....

Just print out an approximately ballistic chart. Nowhere will you get data except in the real world. Besides, you're going to be cranking that knob all day because prairie dogs don't just magically appear at 1,000 yards. Also, prepare for a humbling wind reading experience! I know my first time shooting 1,000 yards was!

Humbling Exp.

I had a little talk with God. They will be All Lined up at exactly 1000 yds. & their will be no wind for the duration !!!!!!!!!:)

During your conversation, it would be good if you asked Him to cross breed them with cattle so they will be 2 feet tall and 2 feet wide. Makes them a lot easier to hit at that distance.

Been there, done that.
