Rimfire reamers

There are a multitude of reamers being used in Centerfire BR. With the exception of some discussion by Calfee on reamers(precision shooting)there
is not much mentioned. Can anyone involved in Rimfire competition offer
info on the state of the art reamers

One thing he did write in his article was the shape of his reamer.
He wrote he used a straight reamer without a taper and cut in the rim later.
There are several types out there as you know. I would Talk to David kiff on choosing one. He can make just about anything you need.
The 22 Rf is a very old case, Over 100 yrs old. Originally it was made for single shot rifle and pistols later for Selfloading rifles and revolvers.
The reamers were made to cut with a taper for easy loading and extraction. I hope this helps some what in the choosing of your reamer.
You will have to ask david about the other types , Benz etc. Model 52 match annie etc.

For all the genuine BR applicable match reamers it's mostly a case of splitting hairs. Dave has all his rimfire reamer specs available in an email.

reamers

Id recommend you get the list of reamers you will see that there are alot of reamers and variation in length. Its interesting looking at the variation and then you look at the 22wmr reamer and see it has a 15 degree leade and ask your self what happened there, lol. Obviously an old design. And none of the most common used reamers are the tightest either although a few are close like the lilja as i recall, i believe the tightest was the freeland.

Here's one of many partial lists I've seen and a drawing of what I'm currently using in my last few builds.

Depending on the gun being chambered for, you may or may not need to cut a rim recess in as barrel. Breakopens headspace in the barrel, some bolts headspace in the face of the bolt as do most semi auto's, others like CZ bolt guns do some in each.

Depending on the use of the rifle some chamber designs are more forgiving with cheaper ammo than a chamber designed strictly for match ammo.

It's good to talk to the builder about your intended useage.
A lot of builders will start with a stock reamer design and order it to their specs, maybe changing one or two of the specs.

Dave Kiff @ PTG is always on top of the current trends for competition.

Bob, a Bentz reamer has tapered walls and is ment more for semi-autos, but retains a match throat for engraving the bullet. It works well for a lot of applications and shoots most ammo well. Because of the tapered walls it is seldom used in true competition rifles. A Win 52 chamber is just an older factory match design, the specs should be on the link by Landy's post.

i know many here hate calfee, but i had my barrel chambered with a calfee chamber. last fall when i was tuning it i was very well impressed with how my rifle was shooting!!! it might do even better with lapua instead of th eley black box!!!

when it warms up i'll let you know.

Has anyone had recent experience with either the Freeland MG reamer or Lilja reamer with current Eley / Lapua or RWS?

Are they excessively tight and require a very good cleaning regime or are they fine for up to 100 shots without chamber cleaning i.e. ISSF shooting

Comments welcome

Very tight

The Freeland reamer is very tight compared to the many others on the market. I find you must keep the chamber and leade clean. Mine prefer the newer Lapua Center X and better over Eley in cold weather.

reamers

The freeland is a very tight chamber.
I find that Lapua L and SK pistol match require a gentle push into the lands with the thumb before I close the bolt. If you need to shoot 100+ rounds, I would consider a different reamer. The PTG match reamer might be a good start.
just my 2cents,

I use a Lilja reamer and have had very good success with it, they are meant for Eley EPS bullets but I have shot Lapua, Wolf, RWS, and others all with no problems and excellent accuracy. The older RWS ammo I have is a tight fit but not the newer stuff.

rimfire reamers

Thanks for the replies; it's a long way and possibly wait to get a reamer that may be not as well suited to modern ammunition

A popular reamer here is a 52D but it seems very wide at the rim end and very short

I don't mind pushing the cartridge into the lands; Anschutz advise in their manuals this should be done (ISSF shooting) but maybe for BR there is a requirement to disturb the setup as little as possible?

Any recommedations welcome?
