Remington 700 Heavy barrel .308 Win small neck conversion

I guess some people missed the Nam, Spray and pray. Lots OF ammo. few marksmen.
The more you sprayed and the faster you were the more valuable you were, They wanted HARD gunners.
On the 60 and 16,s also some marines on the 14,s. The south Viets had a lot of M2 carbines and Garands.
The Garands and 14,s were used a lot there. not everyone liked the 16 especially the early ones. When ever they could find one a good GI would pick a 14 up. Other things were also used like thompsons, greese guns,
Even some BARS showed up. It was a free for all.
Cleaning out rooms I would take the thopmson or greese gun.

gerry...the problem is we are not in nam...with foilage and spraying ak's and sks's to deal with.....

we are in urban and long distance mountain/hill and dessert......
the guns we have work in these enviroments....we have added more accurate mid range long range rifles with scopes and better ammo.....
its no all spray and pray.....
if you check the wwII statisics you will find that guys with garands and 03's often shot over the enemy with no attempt to aim at them......
and you would have an issue with ammo supply if you had a thompson in the deseert...cause we shoot the m9 9mm.....
again one cannot stay in the past......
i like 45's.....but it is not todays sidearm....

Yes I agree it's change but we were talking Garands.
Todays high teck is way ahead of the old tech but you brought up urban.
The 9mm is being replace by some units and going back TO 45,s not enough stopping power for some units. marines love the 45 along with the 14.
One whole army unit has gone back to the 14. It doesn't matter where you fight that older equipment is battle proven.
It still works and works quite well. The 1000 yd head shot is way over blown. Most snipers are getting targets from 200 to 600 meters. a few have barrets but a lot have the new vamped shooting platforms in 308.
The M14 sniper system is also deployed. It isn't all high tech.

i brought up urban to contrast the old time and viet nam with what is happening today

"some units" is not the entire us military...yes some specialized units have gone to 45's . the m9 is stil the issue side arm of the us mil

again one army unit does not make up the entire us mil. we have never stopped using 7.62x51....we just issue them as sr25s/ar10's and m110. the m14 would be way too expensive to produce today. when they are gone thats it.

i think you will find the designated marksman rifle is an upgraded m16 with a better ss bbl and a scope. the mil typically uses 308 in short/ med sniping. the 300 win mag for med/long sniping, the 338 lapua and 50bmg in longggggg range sniping.
the m14 you are talking about is hi tech compared to the original m14...the wood is gone. alumin chassis added
.

I would bet $ that you have a Poorman's conversion by Bob Pease out of New Braunfels Texas (He is deceasesd). I had him build me a .22ppc Poorman's conversion in the early 90's. Would shoot 1/4" groups or less all day with the factory barrel.
If he did this conversion you have a real KEEPER.

Doug

One-hole groups are like a pretty girl. Always nice to look at. :)

As you know, the 168 grain International came to be called the 168 MatchKing and was loaded in the US M852 Match ammunition. I collect match ammunition and related stuff. Would you happen to have a box (even an empty one) with the original International label on it? I have a lot of stuff to trade or would buy it from you. Let me know.
