Rainy Day Project.........

Jackie,

How many times fired did/do they have on them? I'm curious because I retire my 6BR brass at the same round count as my barrels - about 2000 times fired.

Dennis, I suspect my current crop of 150 30BR cases have at over 20 firings each, judging that I have went through about 3500 30 caliber bullets with these.

I am not going to retire them. I made up this new batch mainly to be prepared for the VFS Nationals in Lake Charles.

30 BR cases simply do not exibit the same consequences of repeated firings as do 6mm chamberings. I have only had to trim these cases once, (back to 1.540), in this entire time. And even then they had only grown about .005 inch on average. (My chamber is 1.550 long).

This probably has something to do with the pressure curve in these short 30's. My average velocity with a 112 grn bullet is between 3020 and 3050 fps. I'm not sure how that translates into actual chamber pressure.

Yep, I get 20+ firings on my 6BR brass. I only retire them and the barrel for "preventive" maintenance - don't want any kind of problem on the line while you and Steve are trying to take my money! I don't think I'm loading them too hot - 3300 or so for a 68BT out of a 22-ish long barrel.

Hope to get over to Tomball this year. See ya at ARC, too!

Dusty, you might notice that my chamber is 1.550 long. The very popular Robinette Chamber is about .040 shorter.

This is a product of the way I make 30BR cases. I have a 6mm barrel with a 30 BR chamber in it. When I fire a full load 6BR round in this barrel, what comes out is a fully formed non neck turned 30 BR case. When I blow the cases out this way, the case retains more of the original 6BR's length of 1.560. I had my reamer ground to accommodate this.

After I blow them out, I turn the necks on my Monarch EE tool room lathe, trim to length, and they are ready to go. Here is what the case looks like after I blow it out and before neck turning.

This is a great way to make 30BR cases.

Dumb question- how the 30br chamber in a 6mm barrel? My 30cal pilots have an id bigger than a 237 bore so i cant even start the reamer i dont think

Dusty, I first took a old 6mm barrel and put a standard 6br chamber in it. I then bore and ream the neck portion out to .330 with a regular chucking reamer.

The reason I bore the neck portion first was simply to remove material. From .269 to .330 is quite a bit. You could just as easily run a 5/16 drill in to remove the material, then finish with a reamer.

Most of the shooters in my area use this chamber. I have friends who will bring cases over to my hop and fire them out back.

I have always thought this was the best way to make a 30BR from a Lupua 6BR case. You can also use cases made in this method in a standard Robinett Chamber, just trim them back to the 1.500 overall length.

Jackie,

A few years back you blew out 50 cases for me using your mentioned method.

I really appreciated that, thanx again. I liked the fact that they maintained much of there length, as I too have a 1.550 chamber (unlike mandrel expanding). Also they were essentially ready for neck turning.

When I needed more brass, didn't want to take advantage of your helpful nature, decided to take an old 30BR barrel and:

  1. Load a virgin case with a normal charge and use a 6mm bullet, then fire these through the 30 cal tube into a pile of sand. (FIRE POINT BLANK ONLY)
  2. Then, loaded several more with 7gr Bullseye, topped off with COW and plugged with plumbers putty. I found that 7gr was good. Any more powder didn't make any discernible differences.

Both of these methods have yielded very good results and I continue to use the Bullseye method, it saves bullets and is safer..

I have been asked by some shooters "How can you get SOOOO much 4198 into those cases"?.........LOL

I enjoy reading your posts.

Mine says robinette on it which it seems like every 30br reamer kiff makes says it for some reason but my case length max is 1.560. Im on my 3rd custom 30br reamer and kiff keeps putting robinette or robinett on em

Dusty, mine says...30BR SCHMIDT.

The only difference in it and a Robinett is the length of the neck.

You stated your chamber length is 1.560. Why that long?

I had one that was short. Got tired of trimming off that much of the neck- with bradys bullets there wasnt much in the neck. Got one longer and still had to trim. So i took and neck reamed out my chamber extra long then fired a 6 br in it with bullet, powder only and pistol powder and wax to see how long i could get one. That measurement was 1.550-1.552. Got with kiff and decided to make it .560 to never have a problem and never trim brass. It seems to work fine and now all of his 30br reamers come that way unless you order otherwise and still say robinette. I noticed a few days ago grizzly is selling them and have the print on their site thats identical to mine.

I see now. I blow my cases out with some old surplus 2230 and a regular 6mm bullet. That yields a case that will have an overall length, out of that chamber, of between 1.540 and 1.545. I trim them all to 1.540 to be used in my 1.550 length chamber.
