Puzzled with these new fangled barrels

I have broken in my share of premium barrels such as Shilen, Hart and Douglas and usually find they clean up quickly.

Factory barrels usually take quite a bit longer (Days!). However, I recently tuned up two guns for friends which really puzzled me. Both were 308's. And for those who remember me from the moly wars, I did not use moly since both owners wanted to be able to buy ammo at Walmart (Go figure).

One was a 700 P (not PSS) and I thought I had a high end one as it stopped collecting copper after the third round. The second wasa Savage and it failed to show any green after the second shot. I normally short stroke with RemClean and follow up with Kroil, dry patch and soak overnight with either Montana or Shooters Choice. No green. After 5 rounds, I get the normal carbon but no copper. Now a couple of passes with SC, one with Kroil and then a dry one and you are ready to go racing.

It got me to wondering what the deal is. I have always felt that most of the copper near the muzzle was turned into gasses as the bullet hit the throat and stripped off some of the jacket material and the cooled and condensed further down the barrel.

I rather assume both barrels were hammer forged (possibly Ruger manufacture?) and wondered it the chamber as well as the rifling were part of the mandrel. I know that no lapping or throating cleanup is part of the manufacture of this level or barrel.

Francis, Ucle Bill or cousin Steve or any other wizards have any thoughts on the matter?????

As info, the 700P regularly puts 5 in significantly less than 1/2" at 100 yards regardless of who pulls the trigger. Truly an amazing OEM package.

Yes, Van Beast, I only still use moly and the 6.5/284 Shilen looks like new after well over 1K+ rounds.

Comments?

Well for one. Savage makes its own barrels. They are button reamed.

No Walmart loads for me

Load was 175 SMK (naked and boy did I have to dig around in my stock to find some that I had not coated), Lapua cases and 46 grains of Varget.

Sorry to burst your bubble but I think your copper remover went bad. Rem hammer forges inhouse and Savage button pulls in house, both still foul and the Sav shows chatter marks and fouls badly but usually shoots as good or better than most factory rifles.

Not likely. Bubble still intact. Get copper from barrels that are prone to foul. Nothing much from these.
