I noticed while shooting my rifle this week that I was haveing problems with ejecting live rounds from my 40x. after you fire the rifle it will eject the fired case bt wont eject a live round. Then I was haveing dificulty moveing the bolt up after fireing. Sometimes it is a real effort getting the bolt to close and to move the bolt up to eject a spent case. What could be going on with this rifle. I also dry fired the rifle twice after cutting the bolt spring some to see if the bolt would close or open easier. I am thinking I put a bur on the chamber but can't see it. How would be the best and safest way to fix the bolt and the bur. Thanks for any help.garrisone.

If you have a coned chamber I would bet you have burred the chamber by dry firing. Usually with a burred chamber you can't extract a fired round either. I don't think any of my benchrest rifles will extract a live round.

Try some lub on the lugs and check the firing pin cam also, lub it too, both can cause a hard bolt lift.

If your 40-X was properly smithed it should have .042-.043 headspace and firing pin protrusion from bolt face should be .038 max. This means it should never peen the edge of the chamber. I have dry fired all of mine many times and see no evidence of the firing pin striking the breech.

THANKS ALL WHO RESPONDED TO MY POST> garrisone.

Lots of 22's have problems ejecting live rounds if they are not absolutely clean. Those gummy soft lead bullets stick in the chamber throat. As for the hard bolt movement - when's the last time you pulled the bolt apart and REALLY cleaned it? REALLY got up into the action and cleaned it? Adding more lube and grease is just going to make things worse.

If it's never been done you should take the action out of the stock, remove the receiver filler and the ejector/loading block and clean all the accumulated crud out of the rec.

Then disassemble the bolt and give it a good cleaning and inspection.

Whoa, that caught my attention! "...remove the receiver filler and the ejector/loading block and clean all the accumulated crud out of the rec..." How is thsi done, or is there a source that tells me how to do this?

I disassemble and clean my bolt every 6 mos or so, but never knew a thing about these other items...

Thanks for any help,

Ben

Is it a factory barrel or a custom barrel? Most smiths when installing a custom barrel will chamber it so that the rifling will engrave the bullet and it's a common feature that many guns with custom barrels will not eject a live round.
