Nightforce Question

I have shot some great scores with the Valdada this year. Rock solid.

For what it's worth, about 3 years ago I put a Big March variable on my 30BR, and started dropping a lot of X's. I relented, put the fixed 50x back on, and started winning again.

I don't trust variable scopes on a Benchrest Rifle.

That's something I had been wondering myself. Part of the appeal of the 15-55 was being able to adjust magnification to open the exit pupil a bit in the event I was wanting some more light. Part of the hesitation on the variable was that it had one more feature to have a possible issue with.

I do understand that any piece of equipment can be a dud, whether from a top manufacturer or a big box store bargain brand.

Again, thank you all for your input and support, I am really looking forward to getting out there.

I have both of the scopes that you are asking about, the NF 42X and the 15-55X. I shot the 42X last weekend at Luther in less than stellar conditions and was very well pleased with it. It depends upon what your rifle components are as to how easy it will be to make weight with either scope. I'm using a Scoville stocked Panda with a 5 lb 4 oz barrel with the NF 15-55X and no weight in the butt except for the aluminum plug that screws into the butt. With a heavier stock it would be more difficult to make weight with the 15-55. The 42X will be a lot easier to make weight. The weight on the 42X is just about exactly the same as a March fixed power scope. Clarity of both of the NF scopes I have is outstanding even at 55X on the variable. It's always a good idea to not jump in and buy a scope as soon as it's out on the market to give time for any problems with a new scope to get worked out. So far in the little time, I've used the 42X, I've not seen any problems with it.

I actually ordered the 42X Nightforce yesterday. I have had very good results from my other Nightforce products and ultimately decided I wouldn't have the same level of confidence in anything else. Hopefully I will have only good things to report in the future!

Thanks again to everyone for your input!

I wanted to update this thread now that the IBS Score Nationals are over.

I have been shooting the new Nightforce Fixed 42x since May. I now own 2. One has roughly 1400 rounds under it, the other was brand new going into the nationals (other than a quick load development Thursday night before driving up to New York for the Nationals) so it is right around 200 rounds.

I am extremely pleased with how well they have performed!

Nightforce sponsored the IBS Score Nationals with 2 of these scopes and I sure hope that the winners find them to be as reliable as I have.

Thanks again to everyone for their input earlier this year,

Josh

almost funny josh...

I know that Hillary shoots one of Dean's old NF 12-42X BR model. She was complaining to Dean when the 3 of us went out to eat after the shoot was over on Sunday that she wanted a new 15-55 Comp because she wanted a bit more power. I forgot what Larry had on his rifle but if I had to guess it was probably a Leup.

It's a little late for the purposes of this thread, but I have been shooting a Vortex Golden Eagle 15-60X, and I have been nothing but impressed with it. I think it is the best bang for the buck out there right now, and we'll be seeing a lot more of them in competition next season.

I would consider the eye relief gets considerably shorter when the power gets turned up. Shooting a 30 free recoil you may get hit...... lol..... jim
