I didn't see anyone mention that Fred Moreo at SharpShooter is converting 223 boltheads to PPC. He's also now offering a true 2 oz. trigger, HV stocks and more..

Savage DP

To all of you guys that think the savage will show at and compete in Short Range BR.
If the savage is were the 40X was in the 70s then you are all living in the 70s.
Look at the equipment list for any Nat BR match and show tell me how many 40x actions show up in the winners circle, the Savage has made great strides, but is not a custom BR action and will never be.

Stephen,
If Tony Boyer,Jackie Smidth, and other shooters in SR BR tought that a 40x or Savage would handle the pressures and give the Accuracy they demand in order to win matches then they would be shooting the 40xs and Savages, but since I dont see them using this equipment then I have to believe that these platforms are not competetive.
Savage is not likely to invest in the technology to produce truly BR quality barrels given the limited market.
Having said that I dont doubt that somebody will show a a local club match and win with a 40x or Savage DP but they will not continue to win and get the Shooter of the Year with that platform.
Give it up the Savage and the Rem are not competetive in todays match world and will never be.
Nick

For the rest of us, who shoot locally, the Savage might be a good choice and also one that folks who are just starting out could afford to try out. More rifles cannot be a bad thing.

BTW, Fred is offering Douglas barrels in shop and will work up any aftermarket Savage style blank you provide. I tried one of Shilen's barrels on a .223 Savage varmint action with very good results in a Richards tac stock. Fred should have my 6br done soon and I'll be sure to post results if they're as good as I hope..............

Rarely post, but people like nickloy are why I don't even like to talk to benchrest shooters (with a big B) and I can assure you people like him have discouraged many others from even trying the sport.

I'm sure it wasn't Nick's intent to discourage or talk down to anyone. The fact is, what he said was the absolute truth. It's expensive and pointless to attempt to compete in this game with inferior equipment. In the long run, it's much cheaper to go ahead and acquire the tools to do the job than it is to try and squeak by with factory offerings.

Can a Savage or Remington compete? Yes, but only up to a point. It's really just enough to fool a novice into thinking that's all they need. Get the real stuff and you only cry once.

Why?

I don't see why that should discourage anyone. If you agree with him, then your statement doesn't make any sense. If as I suspect you don't agree, seems to me even more reason to pick one up and prove him wrong.

I saw nothing in his post that should discourage anyone. He simply stated the facts as he sees them.

It would seem that these Sav Fact .25 Aggs exist only in the most perfect of conditions and only when no else is ther to witness a true Agg as the IBS and NBRSA define them, which to me puts them in the realm of make believe.
If I am wrong then I will be more than glad to meet any of these owners at a match in the SE and we will compete and see who finishes best.
Nick

When is the last time you shot a .25 agg with a custom gun ?

Still new to this game but a few thoughts:

I have a Moreo tuned Savage target action:

It has a little "bump" in the opening of the bolt, but otherwise is right there with the custom actions I have felt. I don't know if he gave this action a little extra "love" or not, but it is slicker than two others he did for me.

Applying some of my learnings (Jackie's approach to 133 and the ppc to 135 and the br) from shooting/loading my "custom" BR ppc to the savage 6BR, it is respectable in some winter testing. I am the limiting factor.

The floating bolt head has some merit, especially in regards to cost effectiveness of OEM manufacturing. I have been told that one of our custom action builders has prototyped this design and was surprised at the lug to action contact, but couldn't see a real world difference in performance. True,,, don't know, but heard it two places.

I would not discourage anyone from getting into this sport if this concept fits their head and budget, just be realistic with your expectations. I might try it on a heavy (presently 15lbs+) for local club br use after I convert it to ppc.

But at the end of the day, it doesn't cost that much more to just build around a true BR action after the expense of getting a savage tuned up and installing the 2 oz. trigger.
