New Savage 22-250

Hello all,

Well, I have fought the unruly Abolt as long as I am going to so today I ordered a new 2009 Savage 16flhss with the new"Accustock" on it. It is my first centerfire Savage rifle. As and avid coyote caller, it will be my new calling rifle.

It is a 22-250 with a 22 in bbl(1/12 twist) and I am wondering where some of you might start for loads. It seems to me that I have read that a good "go to" combo is a 55gr NBT and Varget(much like 168smks and varget for a .308). I would like any ideas any of you might have. My bullet of choice is a 50gr Vmax and H4895 at max but I will try anything.

Would you load them to jam? Seating depth starting points?

Any ideas would be immeasurably helpful.

I have 2 Savage 22-250s and the load I keep going back to is 34.7
grains IMR 4064 under Sierra 53gr Matchkings. Another one suggested to me
to try was Winchester 760 at 39gr which surprised me. Same bullet for both.
Holding 10th off lands. Good accuracy from both. Of course, each BBL is
different to which load it likes. Work loads up slowly. :)
 
I've had good success with Varget and the 50 VMAX

In my 12BVSS 22-250 36 - 36.5 gr Varget all shot good with the 50 VMAX & the 1410 Sierra 52 HPBT match bullet. Not the hottest load but very accurate in my rifle.
 
22-250

I believe the proper bullet weight for the 22-250 is 55 grains.

Varget works great and is now top dog over H380.

The Sierra 55 gr. HPBT work best in my rifle. Very good bullet.

I sure wanted to use the Nosler 55 gr BT (looks cool) but it just didn't work for me.

The 55 gr. Sierra Spitzer also shoot well.

The 55 gr Red Prairie Varmint Bullet by Clint Starke is the best:-(=

I'll buy all anyone has!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Clint if you are out there I know what it's like to make bullets. Not many know how many different operations it take to make 1 custom bullet as perfect as you did!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree on the imr and 53smk, nbt also shoot very well as do hornady vmax. I always go back to imr 4064.

41 grains H380, 50 gr NBT, 14 twist bbl.

I have heard many good things about 4064 but never tried it. I have also shot Sierra 52gr HPBT match bullets from 2 different 22-250s and my AR and had good luck with them but never tried the 53s.

The only reason I have not tried 4064 is, up here in MN and out in North Dakota/South Dakota where I hunt, it gets plenty chilly and I my gunsmith told me he was getting radical speed and poi differences because 4064 is super temp sensitive and suggested Varget or H4895 both of which I currently use. This is just one guy but has any one else come accross this?

I am hoping to get a 50gr Vmax or a 50/55gr Nosler BT going as fast as possible. I have never tried the 60gr Vmax. Is there and advantage?

Seating depth starting point anyone? Touching the rifling???? Jam????

Take a look at IMR 4007.

Loading data is on Hodgdon's website.

Impressive accuracy and velocity, and I've been using Varget in the Varminter since it came out!

Favorite Load

I tried Varget but my savage 22-250 never should any promise. I have gone back to H380, 40.0 grains over the Vmax 55 grain. Works well on the cold Alberta prairies.
 
55vmax withH380. 38-38.5 gr. Then move up the charge until groups open or pressure signs , whichever occur first!
 
I have not used the Varget.........

yet, thats on my 'to do' list this year. I too have a 10" '250(Rem), but I shoot the 53 Hornady, which is terrible on the heaviest 'chucks. The 53 Hornady, unlike the Sierras, will open rapidly. I never got the quick kills I thought I should w/the Sierras, and they're not designed to perform that way. I back the bullet out 'til there are no marks on the ogive when smoked. I shoot 41.5 H414, WLR, & the accuracy is phenomenal, and others around here have had the same experience with it in the '250; it seems to group extremely well at 300, regularly. As for the 50 & 55NBTs, they never shot any better then the 53H, so I never bothered with them anymore. We also shot some water jugs at 100, 4-5 guys watching, all said they saw no difference between the two. Not scientific, I know, but.... Where you are, the 55 or 60 VMax may be the ticket when its breezy & cold. HTH:)
 
my 22-250

i have tried the formentioned powders. my rifle doesnt seem too finicky on the powders. however for cleaning i like the varget. it just seemed to clean up easier than ball powders like H380. that said the bullet my rifle prefers is the sierra 55gr blitzking. extremely accurate and really opens the hogs up (red mist.) just like that headless ghog in the back of the truck pic! Fred
