Hi guys,

Long time lurker, first time member. Figured I should register if I'm going to try my hand at this precision shooting thing.

I'm basically a new BR shooter, although shooting and reloading are not new to me. Some of you may have an idea of who I am since I've recently been in contact with a lot of people in the NBRSA and IBS in my search for a new to me bench gun, but for the most part I'm an unknown here.

I've never shot in a match, but hope to change that next season. I'm interested in the short range group game for the most part, but may try my hand at score shooting. I'm currently shooting a LV gun with a Panda action in 6PPC that I bought used back in the spring. It is quite the learning curve to say the least but it has been fun so far in spite of the bumps in the road.

There are some heavy hitters here who've probably forgotten more about bench shooting than I currently know, so I won't have much to add.

You need to look up Dave Short. He is in the Pittsburgh area. A great resource for 'smithing, shooting, and just general BS in the SW PA area.

Also, you should at least plan on visiting the Super Shoot in May of 2018. It is the largest collection of benchrest enthusiasts in the US at one time and all are ready to answer questions or for that matter, let you shoot their equipment. And most of the best retailer in the BR game will be selling their wares there.

Thanks for the welcome

I had a few issues when I first got the Panda. As luck would have it, Dave Short did a nice job correcting the issues with a quick turnaround time. He didn't over charge me either and has been great about passing out good free advice.
 
I've been a member here for 20 some years and seldom post, but I do enjoy this site and view it daily.

Good group of folks here, don'tcha think? Most all are ready to help a new guy. Kind of unusual on a public internet forum, as so many other sites have been filled with "adolescents" bickering and berating one another at every turn.

A good book out when I started shooting BR was the one by Glenn Newick, I learned a lot from it, and it wasn't too long of a read. Just basic explanations and suggestions.

Great, you're already off to a good start by attending this forum. Now the next best thing is to participate in matches. You will learn more in matches than any book or advise will teach you. Matches is where you will learn by your mistakes and also get advise from other competitors that will be more than willing to help a new shooter. We LOVE new shooters. They add to the sport and give the rest of us a chance to pass on our knowledge for a better shooting experience.

Welcome aboard! Since you are in SW PA you should try to attend the Hog Roast next Spring. It is a well run match and you will gain a lot of experience. Especially how to shoot in the wind.

It is located about 7-8 south of Uniontown, PA in the town of Fairchance.

It is well attended and a great opportunity to meet some real nice people.

Thanks for the tip on the Newick book.

I'm sure there are plenty of good folks here. There has to be. I'm sure there a turd or three in the punch bowl too.:D The drama going on in the competition forum is a bit ugly though.

Thanks. That is the plan Bill. I've actually been to Fairchance a couple times. I was a lurker at the last Hog Roast and made it down there again the day before the Eastern Regionals started to get a better idea of what type of bench equipment is needed to reload at a match. Dave Bruno tried to get me to shoot that match, but I had another commitment. He introduced me to some of the players and the guys I met were nice.

Dave is actually putting together a new PPC for me right now. Hopefully, I'll have everything I need in place by then. The equipment list is big to shoot in a match. Dave said he'd help with my missing items so I don't really have many excuses any more. I just need to get my brain over the hump and go do it.
 
Hi Jim,

Dave Bruno is a great guy and will be a big help in getting you set up. This game is equipment intensive and we tend to buy more things than we really need. By shooting at a match you get to learn real fast what is and what is not important.

Benchrest shooters are great people to spend some time with. I had an equipment problem at Kane this summer and both Dave Bruno and Jack Neary spent some time helping me through it.

The shooters become like family and attending a big match is like a family reunion. We can be dead serious about our shooting, but in most cases a fun time was had by all.

You could not meet a better bunch of people, (I say that because there are women on this board). Dave is a top mechanic. Also what is said is not meant to discourage you, but help you. There are a number of books to be read, Warren Page, The Accurate Rifle. Glen Newick, The Ultimate Rifle Accuracy. Mike Ratigan, Extreme Rifle Accuracy. Tony Boyer, The Book on Rifle Accuracy. Jim Carmichel, Classic Carmichel. Plus another which I am not allowed to say yet, and look what it has done for me, (careful you people I can hear you laughing) and they even let foreign's in EH!!!!!!!!! So it could not be a better group.

As close as you are to Super Shoot, you should come and shoot next year's match here at Kelbly's. I have had many a new shooter tell me that they learned more in four days at Super Shoot then several years of local shooting before they came to Super Shoot. You will have many of the top shooters, get to see all the top equipment, flags and with 5 to 6 relays you have plenty of time to visit and learn from fellow competitors. The Super Shoot is a non affiliated match so no need to worry about what association you belong to. Entry forms are posted on top of this forum.

I do wish you the best of luck, and if we here at Kelbly's can ever help just ask.
