I'm preparing to build a new rifle. This rifle will be composed of a Rock Creek 26" barrel in a 1 in 8' twist, cahmbered in 6BR, built on a trued 700 action, bedded in a Mcmillan HBR stock.

I am wanting to do some club level 600 yard matches along with some long range varmint hunting.

My question is does anybody feel that this is a competitive combination off the bench? or is there some areas that could use some improvements without building a rifle that will be to combersome to use as a varmint rig?

This is a fine choice of components. Properly spec'd and properly assembled it will definitely be competitive anywhere in the world.

PROPERLY spec'd and built that is..... there are more ways to pus this up than to make it good.

May I suggest that it would be cheaper and better to start with a Rem700 clone action than to true one up? "Trued 700 action" can mean a lot of things. An action trued and bumped by Jim Borden WILL be competitive. An action align-bored and fitted with an oversized bolt from PTG will be competitive provided the work is done properly and the assembler understands timing and firing pin support. The typical "trued 700" WILL NOT be competitive in any but club matches.

Unless there is a stock width restriction in the 600 yd matches you shoot, you DO NOT want a HBR stock. You really do want the widest forend you can possibly use, at least a 3" Varmint stoch. The 2 1/4" stock would be a huge handicap to RTB and bag manners. That is one of the reason that Hunter Bench Rest is limited to 2 1/4, to make the game more difficult.

How would a Rem clone stack up against the customs?

Well, the Rem clones I'm talking about ARE customs :) As such they're straighter and more consistent than a 700. A Benchrest style custom will have some features that enhance smoothness and stiffness but a 700 clone will shoot as well as a repeater can as long as the stock support is there and the build is good.

As Snidely said, "every time."

This is huge.
