Need more 6 mm VLDs.

I've been using 6mm Berger 105 gr. VLD Match Hunting bullets. I'm at the point where I want to buy a box of 500 instead of 100 at a time, but only see them in Match. I have read reviews that the Match VLD have had some Lot #s that don't shoot consistently. Are there any lot #s that I should avoid and which Lots shoot exceptional and do the Match VLDs shoot as good or better then the Match Hunting bullets?

Thanks in advance,

105 vld hunting

Sinclair, Powder Valley, and Grafs all have 100 count boxes in stock. I did not see 500 count boxes. I'd buy now if I needed bullets, because they usually get scarce latter in the season. Powder Valley has the best price of the 3 I listed. They have them for $29.00/ box.

I have no lot info regarding match 105's. I have not tried them. I shoot 105 vld hunting in my dasher, and they work. Don't see the need to change.

Regards, Waverly

Just a note on Berger's nomenclature. They seem to use the word "Match" for both "Hunting" and "Target" type bullets. IIRC, the "Hunting" bullets have the thinner jacket.

I'm sure Berger tries to make both "target" and "hunting" bullets to the same level of quality, hence they call both "match." They've made the thicker jackets so us long-range target shooters can drive our bullets really hard and not have them come apart.

It's sort of interesting -- in my experience, it is usually hunters that try for ever-bigger cases and more speed, not target shooters. But small-caliber (anything under about .375) hunting bullets do have to expand to be effective, so Berger's kinda stuck.

I have found in my shooting the Berger 105 gr. VLD Target bullet ( Yellow Box) to be more consistent lot to lot than the Berger 105 gr. VLD Hunting bullets (orange box) . The chamberings i use don't require the thicker jacket of the Target bullet but I have just found them to shoot better for me . However last year Berger made a change in the manufacturing of the 105 gr. VLD Target bullet which left it with a larger meplat which reduced the BC of the bullet significantly . Even with the change the new Target VLD's still shoot better for me than the Hunting bullet lot to lot however the lower BC really shows itself on paper at 600 yds. The Target bullet would probably benefit if they were pointed after market. FWIW

I seem to remember a while back you indicating you had some good results jumping the 105 VLD's around .040", is that correct? I have just started tinkering with jumping VLD's and after many years of shooting them in the lands it's hard to break old habits, but in some initial testing jumping them .040" seemed to work well. Do you (still) jump them?

No, Robert that was probably Sam Hall he has had good luck jumping VLD's but like you said it's hard for me to break old habits. Although I have had fairly good success jumping VLD's in a couple of hunting rifles where the magazine limited my OAL.

Rodney - it may have been a discussion relating to your hunting loads - it's been a while - probably more likely an incorrect recollection on my part. In any case, thanks for the reply.

Robert aren't you the same guy who is selling/marketing BRX reamers? I thought you had worked with all the top shooters on designing that reamer and coming out with the INDUSTRY STANDARD?
I am suprised you are asking vld jump questions here when you worked with all the top shooters on that project.
Are we to assume that all the top shooters were jamming the vld's as you do?

I never marketed or sold BRX reamers (never ever).

Be well Lynn. You're the best when you are positive and giving good solid information based upon your technical shooting experience and expertise.

Well I just ordered 500 Berger Hunting Match 105 gr. VLDs from Powder Valley, Inc. They told me that they get them in 5 100 count boxes per container? or shrink wrapped? and they should all be the same Lot #. I hope I get a good lot #. I did not get the "MATCH" because the Metlap on those are larger and the BC is lower and I have not got into pointing yet and I'll use them for hunting.
