Need Help with 30 BR Cases

Seems that I bought a rifle with a PPC bolt face. It's barreled in 30 BR. Where can I get the base of my cases rebated to PPC size. Unfortunately I do not have a lathe.

Well, it depends on the action, but I'd check into having the boltface opened up. For example, Panda's and (most) BATs can use a boltface that will handle -- perfectly -- either a PPC or a BR. Remington's and drop-port Vipers cannot.

The reason for this is the cost for opening up the BF is usually small -- $45 for a Panda, maybe? Plus a little for an extractor? But Ron Hoehn charges $1.00 each (100 minimum) to rebate the BR rim to fit a PPC.

You can see that rebating the rim makes economic sense only if you do it yourself, or have an action that can't serve two masters.

Ron...contact Wayne Shaw at Shaws Rifles in Virginia...he did mine for me and was quite reasonable...he shoots a 30BR using a ppc bolt face...so he knows how to do it right...Wayne is a regular here on the forums..

Who in the World would sell you a gun with a 30 BR barrel and a PPC bolt face? I am just surprised someone so unknowledgeable could even put a barrel on a receiver. In the long run it may be cheaper to get a new barrel.

Hi Ted,

I want the 30 BR. I'm told that guys do this all the time. They are able to crank on a 6 PPC barrel, or a 30 BR barrel with rebated cases. That way you have two guns in one. All I was really looking for was someone to turn the bases on my 30 BR brass to 6 PPC base diameter. I did not intend to start a who did what or why.

You should check out the 30 major . It uses brass with a 6ppc bolt head.
Some are using it instead of the 30 br
 
I cannot believe the number of random, useless and downright stupid responses. If you have a drill press, table top or stand alone, just put the 30BR case in with the rim down right at the end of the chuck. Then take a fine tooth file and spin them suckers up. Hold the file against the rim of the 30Br case and in about 30-45 seconds you have reduced the rim diameter to fit the ppc bolt face. Just check now and then and pretty soon you will know about how long to hold the file against the rim. You could of course use the bolt to check as to when you get to the diameter that works. It is actually dirt simple. I have done bunches of them and sometimes you have to chamfer the upper edge of the rim to get them to eject properly. But all done with a drill press and a fine tooth flat bastard file. Simple simple.

I turn my 6brx case's to fit the ppc bolt face down with my mini lathe, it's not hard I ground a tool to make all three cuts at once, I set my dial indicator and take the exact same amount off each time, of course as you probably know when you turn the rim you loose most all the rim your extractor needs to properly insure a positive extraction so you have to turn the extractor groove as well and bevel the case head, I can see with the file how you get the rim size down and the bevel but how do you cut the new extractor groove with the file and how do you insure there all exactly the same dimensions? just curious as I have other friends that would like me to turn there cases but I just don't have time, I could tell them about your process and they could do it themselves.

Why would you need to ensure that?

I'll agree that a mini lathe would pay for itself if you have to pay $1.00/ea to have them turned, but again, opening up the boltface (if the action will take this) is probably cheaper still. You can do it with a drill press and a couple files if you're careful. Worst case is you trash a few pieces.

I guess I just figured anything that is precise like a ppc or Br case needs to remain precise, I guess your right it probably doesn't matter.

Surprised no one has mentioned or questioned the original statement

Seems to me, if the gun is barreled in BR then......
Did the original owner turn down the rims????
 
The drill press thing falls short because now you have an issue with shell holder fit when priming and sizing in a die. If a case
gets filed a bit to much and fails to extract during a match, shooting 9's is the least of your worries.

Ron...what kind of extractor does your bolt have?...can you post some photos of your bolt face?

First time I read your reply I thought you had lost your mind. I thought you were saying use a file on your bolt in a drill press. However after rereading it I realize you are talking about cases not the bolt.
