Need Help With 25/06

To 25 Shooter and others.

Bought some 100g Sierra Flat Base and some 87g Sierra varminters yesterday. Loaded a few up and tried them on my private range this afternoon. Loaded 55g of AR2213 short cut which is the Australian equivalent of H4831, and WLR primers behind the 100 grainers, with a number of different seating depths. I only fired two batches of three shots each and the first one went 1.1". The second three shot 3 shot 100yd group was sub 1/4", so I didn't even bother to try the other combinations. All bullet holes were perfectly round and I live in a warm climate, so I may be on a winner with the 100g pills. Next I gave the 87g a go, but my results with 59g of short cut short were equivical. Generally they were shooting around 1 1/2" for three shots, but then I found a seating depth combination that showed a bit of promise. The first 2 cut into better than 1/4" but the third was a big flier, I found out why when I went back to the house. It was getting dark and for the last one I had picked up the wrong bullet:eek: the right one was still sitting in the bullet box, so I guess I will need to try that combination again.

Murphy , it seems like you have a keeper there.

If the 100 gr Sierra shoots that well I dont see much point in spending time on finding a load for the 87 gr as there isnt al that much difference in velocity. On the other hand you might want to give 75 gr V-max a try it has been very accurate in all my .25 cal rifles. 75 gr Sierra also might work well. At about 4000 fps it would give you a lazer trajectory. With those two loads you would have superb varmint rifle with big game capabilities. If the 75 gr bullet doesnt work for you the 100 gr load at 3400 fps will do for you all you need to be done.

To .25 shooter

Am heading for the Big Smoke tomorrow to pick up my mother for xmas, so wll get some V Max in Brisbane. The local gun shop here does not carry them but I found 12 that I had left over from my 25/20 Martini. Initial testing was ok without being fantastic. Using 55g of Win 760 I got them down to about .75" for 3 shots with very mild pressures. They are just begging for me to up the powder to about 57g so I will cautiously work my way up there and see what happens. Have loaded up more 100s and 87s for a retest and a chrono session and will publish my results when xmas is over. Have a good Xmas. Murphy:D

...Might try some Nosler 100gr BT's with 53.1grs of RL-19 & 210m prs..015 off the lands..My shilen sporter put 3 - in the same hole with that load.....I'ld post it but nobody would believe it..lol..If I didn't shoot it I probably would'nt have believed it either...;)

I have been shooting the 25-06 since about 1955 back when it was a wildcat. Since then I have always favored the 25 bore.

For many years I only considered the 1-10 twist barrels. Now days I favor the 1-14 for most applications.

As the 25-06 has an overbore powder capacity I have switch some of my barrels to the 25 BR. I just chambered a 25-14 barrel in 25 BR. After about 100 rounds I can tell you it stabilizes a 87 Berger Match bullet and the 88 BIB Match Bullet very nicely. Very tight groups. These are both long pointed bullets with flat bases.

Bullet stability is mostly a factor of RPM. The slower twist barrels allow higher velocity with equals higher RPMs. I think I may be able to get this 25 BR to shoot a 100 gr bullet with a short point and a flat base.

Another important point about bullet stability is muzzle blast. The 25-06 holds more slow burning powder than you can use in a short barrel. With high levels of muzzle blast the hot gasses will upset the bullet when it exits the muzzle. The bullet starts off conning. When this happens a lot of spin, Higher RPMs, is needed to stabilize the bullet. Using a faster burning powder can help if you are looking for accuracy.

The boat tail bullets are harder to stabilize than the flat base bullets. They need more RPM.

To get the best out of a 25-06 the barrel should be about 28" if you are to use the full case capacity. The 25-284 has almost the same powder capacity but is generally a little better than the 25-06. Maybe it is the short fat case??

The 25-08 or 25 Souper are consider by many to be overall better than the 25-06 with the powders we have today.

Usually with a good quality 1-10 twist 25-06 SST barrel I get 2,000+ rounds before the five shot groups open to 3/4 inch. (Usually by 1,200 rounds the barrel groups open to over 1/2 in) After that I cut off the shank and rechamber. Rechambered in 25-06 after 2,000 rounds usually results in a short, 23 inch, barrel as the throats are toast for several inches. The short rechambered barrel will shoot a 115 bullet at 3,000 and group about 1/2" with all the muzzle blast. I get 300 to 400 shots with the short barrel.

If you rechamber a 25-06 barrel it is better to chamber it to a shorter case with less powder capacity. These work better in the shorter barrels.

Shoot safe and have fun.

Thanks for the information, Had to read your post twice , just to take it all in. Am putting together another thread, so if you happen to read it you are welcome to comment some more if you wish. Reguards Murphy:D
