My varminter has a 2.5" forend that will not fit properly into a 3" bag. The rest top is simply not wide enough. This is an older Hart rest that I have used for years with hunting rifles. I bought a Sinclair top and it is also too narrow.
What rest should I buy to accomodate the 3" bag? Would like to keep it around $350.

This Sinclair rest top should accomodate a wide range of stock forends.

Well, the Sinclair top is nice and I have one. But take a look at the Fudd top. I have one of those and it is super nice, very well made. Listed on the homepage under Rests and Bags as Benchrest Specialties. I highly recommend it. If I had to live with just one rest (I have Sinclairs, Whichta, Farley, Hart/Fudd), I would keep the Fudd.

Sinclair BR forearm adapter

I would suggest putting a Sinclair BR forearm adapter on your stock to give you a good stable 3" wide forearm that works with standard BR rest. Less that $30 if I remember right. Very stable, legal for competition, and go on with one screw. I have 2 of them and have no complaints.

Would it be OK if it was $140.00 less ???

You might take a look at ... the Cowan Front Rest. Here is Joe Cowan's email address and phone number: jcowan1@aasdcat.com, 814-946-8450 X1235. A couple of us at the Austin Rifle Club have Joe's rest and find it to be extremely stable and a great value; $210.00 includes shipping. Joe's also a nice person to deal with. The picture in this attachment shows the rest in Red. It's actually gold, silver, and black and does not include the Sinclair speed screw shown. The rest has sold worldwide, with all proceeds going back to Joe's students who use the money for local worthy causes.

The windage-adjustable front rest is made in the machine shop at the Altoona Area High School Career and Technology Center. Many shooters call it the 'Cowan Rest'. Joe Cowan is the instructor for the Altoona HS program. These excellent tripod rests have been sold world-wide, with all proceeds going back to the students. This program and what the students have done with some of the money is worth a story by itself. The Cowen Rest ia a very nice design--stable and easy to adjust, and you know your money will be going into a worthy endeavor.

Smaller Rest

Why would changing to a smaller front bag help? The 3" bag I have now is too small.

I was going to suggest the same as Tiny68 - or to make one for yourself as I did (lots cheaper!)...but then I got confused...how is a 3" bag too small for a 2.5" stock?

Can you provide photos?

Are you saying the forearm will not fit into the bag, or the forearm does not ride correctly because the conture does not match.

Most 3" bags I have seen are made for flat bottom BR stocks.

Only guessing here, but is your forearm like a Winchester Targetmaster stock, rounded?

If so, you will need to find one either made for that forearm or have one made.

They guy to contact is Jack Snyder at Edgewood.

He will make you anything you want.

Fit

The contour of my rest top is cupped on either side but not really enough to effect the fit of the bag. I bought a Sinclair top and it won't fit either.
