MATCO Barrels

Howdy !

The MATCO barrels I'm aware of, orignated from North Manchester, IN.

Originally... a gent named Bob " RED " Scherer was producing cut-rifled barrels in North Manchester; under the roof of Scheutz ( " sheets " ) Bros
gunstore. In the late 70s ( I beleive ) Scheutz Bros moved into downtown
North Manchster. And, somewhere in that time frame, Red Scherer stepped away from barrel making.

* Red's products were top-of-the-line, custom made to order in all respects.

Sometime after the move downtown, Scheutz Bros re-named as MATCO
( I don't know the history, on that ). I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime-in. It's a pretty safe bet, though; that whoever was cutting
rifling @ MATCO has tutelled under Red; and also probably had his machines.

Red had some protege's that studied the craft under him, and I think perhaps one is Mark Penrod; of PENROD PRECISiON...still in North Manchester.
Another Dude took his knowledge with hime, and re-located to Wisconsin
( again, I believe ) where there are today a whole host of custom barrel makers. ONE OF the above guys has Red's old Pratt & Whitney rifling machine, I have heard.

I can't speak to MATCO barrel quality out of any personal experience, but Red's work was superb ! If he passed on what he knew about cuttng rifling,
MATCO stuff should be good-to-go.

Mr. Penrod today, also enjoys a good rep for turning out accurate ridles.

Matco

I can't add a lot to .357's post but every little helps.
Prior to North Manchester Sherer was set up with Ted Holmes gun shop in Mattoon, Ill. Any barrel with Holms name was made by Sherer.
If you looked at the equipment list published monthly in PS in the mid to late 70's you will note three barrels in the top. McMillan. Hart and Matco.
A friend bought a matco barrel for RF in the late 70's, early 80's. It shot well.
One oddity is that that barrel was a 5 groove. Whether this was the norm I don't know.
I wouldn't be afraid of an old Matco barrel in the least.
As for current I don't know if they are still in business. A call to Penrod could settle that.

Thank you .357 MAG and BrianJ for all the information. I have fourteen of these barrels in different lengths and configurations for various model High Standard pistols. They are extremely accurate and frame lock up is excellent. I never shot matches with High Standard back in those days, 50's, 60's, 70's, but about ten years ago I got interested in all the High Standard variations including back to the Hartford Arms & Equip. and Fiala days and started buying different models. Some of the High Standard models had MATCO barrels and others had an extra Matco barrel or two with them. I was curious as to the origin of the maker as they are excellent quality barrels and I thank you again for all the information.

Matco

44-40,
Some time ago, while PS covers were still B&W Sherer was pictured on the cover, maybe 70's. They may have had a short piece inside as well. Can't recall for sure. Also, back about that time PS did an article (single or ongoing??) where they interviewed the major barrel makers and if not mistaken Matco participated.
