M98 magazine

Is it possible to modify a M98 LR magazine to consistently feed a 6mmBR cartridge? If so how would it be done?

How would you be using this set-up? That does not sound like a easy conversion.

I have a Mauser 98 action, in a stock but without a barrel. I wanted to make it into a 6mm and since I already have a
24lb. rifle chambered in 6mm BR I thought about using that same round.
I know that short cases don't work well in long magazines and wondered if it can be done to reliably and how it could
be done. It would be a hunting gun for antelope out west.

You may have to use a mag block made out of something like Delrin and modify (shorten) a mag follower. Early Savage long actions were done this way to feed 223 reliably. The case diameter is the same on the 6mm BR as other cartridges (.473") so once the long length is eliminated, it should feed nicely.

Sounds tricky. The way I see it, you'll need to resolve these issues:

  • First you'd need to fiddle with a magazine full of dummy round to see just where along the magazine length the cartridge sits & feeds from best. Maybe it won't be right back or right forward - it might be somewhere in between, depending on the follower profile. Hopefully, you won't have to buggarise around with the profile of the magazine cutout.
  • Then you'd need to block one or both ends of the magazine, after trimming the follower to size.
  • Lastly, you'd have to have a suitable magazine spring manufactured & maybe create a new anchor point on the bottom of the follower for the spring. A leaf spring like the original only shorter could be a problem finding. You might need to have a box helix style fabricated in wire.
Then again, it could be as simple as attaching a couple of ribs on the magazine box just forward of where the shoulder of the case sits & relieving the follower accordingly so that the rounds stay at the back of the magazine. It's not like you'll need to cycle that bolt quick shooting antelope, surely, so a small jump from where the round pops out of the mag unitl it's up to the chamber shouldn't be all that much of an issue.

i cant comment on making a 6mmBR feed from a standard mauser, but the magazine length overall shouldnt be a big issue. you most likely wont even need to consider making mag spacers as the round isnt going to generate a whole bunch of recoil. not exactly the same, but a whole bunch of 22-250's have been built on M98 mausers without any sort of spacer, and they typically function just fine. if you can manage to make it feed, you'll only have some extra bolt throw length which isnt a real big deal.
