Looking for ~$500 bench fun

Tikka T3 varminter

My father has just purchased a T3 varminter in 223, we started breaking in the barrel last weekend by the time we had 30 shots through it we started to shoot some 0.5 inch 5 shot & 0.4 inch 5 shot groups at 100 yards, we started 0.020 then 0.015 now 0.010 off the lands, the accuracy got better as we approached the lands. Next weekend might be quite interesting to see what we can get out of it. The T3 stock looks and feels a bit cheap the trigger has been played with by the shop, its now less than 1/2 a pound.
Cheers Nick

Boyd's stock

My latest Boyd's catalog (early 2007) list the Target Varminter for a SA savage with the blind magazine (Part Number 503-056) for $78.74. I couldn't find it on-line either. Call them and ask. Their web-site is lacking. I have seen this on a couple of friends guns and it looks and feels great. Mine had good fitting and only took minimal work to get a good fit. The only major work was to open the barrel channel up for my LV contour. It comes in a sporter configuration for some reason. They will do it, but it was like +$40. A few pieces of sandpaper and a "1 socket and it takes about an hour.

A'gain Lynn is speakin' my language.... :)

Really I can't see ANY reason to get a 22-250 unless you get the rifle so cheap that the barrel is just bonus. 22-250 bbla are some of the easiest to sell. Now, if you HAVE to get a new rifle and you HAVE to pick a chambering and order it, I'll agree with your idea that you get it in .243.

You're right about the boltface diameter......and regardless that you "can" switch out bolt heads, it's a bad idea.

Here's how I see it;

Say you get'cherself a nice little .243......in fact you could order it with a heavy varmint barrel..... and you play with it. The first thing that you'll realize is that it will do EVERYTHING that the 22-250 will do, just better.

F'rinstance, the Go-To load for the 22-250 is the 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tip running around 3600fps. Sure, you can go just a little hotter but you'll well and truly WRECK your brass in a short, even with Lapua brass you'll fight for 3650fps with caselife. Now the 6MM NBt in 55gr is just as cheap to shoot, it even has exactly the same Ballistic Coefficient as the .22 caliber 55gr.........but you can easily push it up to 3800fps! AND the .243 is inherently more accurate than the 22-250 with slightly better barrel life. There's NO downside.......and when you're ready to pop for the 6BR in the suh-WHEEET 8" twist each and every one of those old left over 6MM's will be put to good use. The only thing you'll lose out on will be your primers, you'll have to use them up in something else.

AND, if the recoil of 55's at 3800fps proves to be too much you really can download the .243 pretty easily and maintain accuracy. You'll be hard pressed to get it down to the .223 but it'll lighten up a lot.

get 'er DONE!

Can a Savage 12BVSS in 223 be set up with a new barrel and bolthead to shoot 6MM?

yep

Can a Savage 12BVSS in 223 be set up with a new barrel and bolthead to shoot 6MM?

Yes.... But it'll have to be a single shot... Really no good mag conversion.

Best bet is to call up SSS "Sharp Shooters Supply" and order the complete bolt head.

BOLT HEADS
Complete Push Feed Bolt Head (includes extractor & ejector parts) $55.00
Complete Push Feed Bolt Head (with new barrel purchase) $50.00
Complete Controlled Round Feed Bolt Head (includes ejector parts) $68.00
Complete PPC Bolt Head (includes extractor & ejector parts) $75.00
PPC Bolt Head Conversion (using your supplied bolt head) $45.00

Their Douglas per finished barrels are super excellent!

With the proper tools and a solid bedding, you'll be shoot'n bug holes.:)

I was in Dick's Sporting goods yesterday. They had Remmington 700 Varmint rifles in .223 rem. for $469 after a $30 mail-in rebate. They had bases and rings and a $20 4x12 scope mounted. Green plastic stock was pretty nice. They had a nice heft to them, like you could walk around with it. I have 6 unfinished project rifles at home and just couldn't bring myself to buy one, but I was sorely tempted. I'd rather they keep the scope and forget the rebate, but that's marketing for you.

... I have 3 22/250s and no .223... You know, I have .223 dies and brass... bullets, primers, powder... Its raining... It really isn't that far to Dick's... I could sell one of these other guns later.... "we got half a pack of cigarretts, a full tank of gas, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses, let's roll!".

I bought a Model 16 Savage (Weather Warrior) in .243. For a light sporter it shoots like a dream. The flimsy stock with mold marks all over it is ugly but doesn't seem to hurt grouping - at least the three shot groups customary for a light hunting rifle. Get a Savage varminter and give the factory stock a chance. Some won't even shoot Savages until they have replaced the factory stock. See how it will do out of the box before spending on aftermarket stuff. It may meet your accuracy criteria out of the box.

Another vote for savage. I tried to do what your are doing with a remy varmit and gave up.

I have a tupperware savage 223 that will shoot some 5 shot 2's and a bunch of 3's if I use Bart's. Problem is it fouls real fast.

I also have a Savage LRVP action, SSS stocked, shilen 6BR rifle that has shot some 1's, mainly 2's, and some 3's. Anything over that is driver error (or wrong powder,,, VV needs larger font!)

I am not a savage fanatic, but they are cheap, they shoot, and almost anybody can twist a high quality aftermarket barrel on one when they desire.

Greetings. I have a Howa 1500 Varminter Supreme in .223 and she's a sweet, sweet girl! I wouldn't hesitate to buy another. However, if I were shopping for another .223 today I'd have a tough time choosing between one of these:

CZ-527 Varmint Kevlar 24" 1:9 twist

Savage 10FP 24" 1:9 twist

Howa 1500 Varminter Supreme 24" 1:12 twist

Glad I'm not shopping for another .223 :D

Cheers,

Mark
