I have a Remington 700 Varmit Rrifle and Leupold two piece quick release scope base. There are four screws: Two short and two long. Do the short screws go in the front or rear base? Norman Thank You
I am pretty sure that the short ones go in the front. There is more thickness in the action in the rear. If you use the long ones in the front, they may bottom out before the base tightens. This can also damage the barrel threads if you try to tighten them up.
With the bolt in the rifle I always tighten one screw and check if the base tightened down to the action.. then loosen that screw and do another and repeat until you have confirmed each screw does in fact tighten the base to the action... then go ahead and tighten them all.
