I've seen a Leupold M8 36x advertised locally.

I'm not familiar with this model. What's it's ancestry & suitability for serious shooting?

Thanks

John

M8 was a model designation used from the 50's up until recently~2006. Used on their fixed power scopes. Replaced by FX III model (uses multi-coat 4 lenses) and the LCS line.
Came in the following powers: 2-1/2, 4, 6, 7-1/2 ( actually have one), 8, 10, 12, 16, 24, 36.
I believe Leupolds web-site has the date codes (uses letter prefix)
Still very common to see on BR circuit.

One thing to ask about is if the turrets are click adjustment or friction. I've got a couple of the lower power M8 (2 1/2x, 4x, and 10x) and they are all friction knobs. I think they are good reliable scopes, but if you are relying on adjustments during a string, you are not going to get positive incremental movement of the reticle. Never did understand why (other than cost) Leupold would use this type of adjustment when much less expensive scopes use clicks on the knobs.
