I have seen the term "laydown insert" used when it comes to tool bits. GOOGLE doesn't yield a definition of what it is. Can someone please advise what a laydown insert is and what its used for?

Thanks in advance,
Ben H

Laydown inserts are usually full profile inserts. They provide more clearance and are necessary for cutting internal threads with small ID's. . If they are not full profile, they are the the least durable insert. Most are not universal and only cut a certain pitch and use tapered shims under the insert so they cut on the proper angle for a particular pitch range. They cut the best thread profiles. Stand up inserts are tougher and top notch are the strongest, but the least desirable for cutting certain pitch threads.

Most insert cutting tools are described as "laydown" or "on edge". When an insert is used with its largest surface as the up or cutting side it is a laydown insert. If the thinnest surface is up or the cutting surface it is an on edge insert.
