Lapping Compound?

Is there any danger in using valve grinding compound to lap scope rings?

800 grit?

I am out of the stuff sold for lapping rings.

Thanks

Go to the auto parts store and get some valve lapping compound. 800X? you don't have enough life left to lap them with the 800X

Ok, maybe this should be on the humor forum.

I go into the local chain auto parts store and ask the nice young man behind the counter if they had any valve grinding compound. He starts typing away and asks what make, model and year of car I had. I started laughing so hard I almost fell over. Made me feel bad, but could not help myself.

I had walked the isles looking for little green cans of Glover compound, but never found any. What they had was a tube of Permatex valve grinding compound. Nowhere on the packaging or tube does it call out the grit. I bought it anyway and have retreated to my cave.

Just found out this little tube has 122, 150, 180 and 220 all in the same tube!

I had almost the opposite discussion yesterday - the fellow at the auto parts store said the lady ahead of me had been worried because the windshield washer fluid did say that it 'fit' a Toyota on it...

If you're bedding the rings after lapping, the Permatex valve grinding compound gives an excellent finish for the bedding compound.

Good shootin' -Al

Lady ahead of me in line was ordering a new dipstick because "this one doesn't reach the oil any more" and the tech behind the counter said "just have your mechanic trim an inch or so off your filler tube".......
