Kids BB guns

Ok ...we all know that BR shooters are crazy. I have two girls who have decided to join our local BB gun team. Of course can't let them shoot something ugly or inaccurate.

Doing trigger work on a trigger made out of plastic was quite a task. I also couldn't add a textured butt plate - only allowed to modify the stock piece. So i checkered it. The screw in the center is a weight system.

I also must say thanks to Charlie Hood who donated two shooting mats when he heard about the girls. Thanks Charlie.

Scott,
It's a fine town in America that has a local BB gun team. We'll be rootin' for the girls to tie for first place ! Let us know how things finish up.

Nothing better

Nice work on those 499's! Nothing better than starting with a BB gun. Teaches safety, trigger control and nobody gets the flinches from the recoil. I am 57 years old and have re-kindled my love of BB guns. My shooting hat wears a vintage "Daisy Air Rifle World-wide Safety League" "SHOOT SAFE BUDDY" pin from the 1940s. The Daisy safety pledge from the buttstock of my model 25: I PLEDGE MYSELF TO PROTECT PEOPLE ANIMALS AND PROPERTY IN MY COMMUNITY BY ALWAYS AIMING AND SHOOTING MY DAISY SAFELY

Scott ...

I have two girls who have decided to join our local BB gun team.

You might want to check out the Airgun Forum here at Benchrest Central. I don't think many people recognize that there is one. It's a sleeper. It's just above the Gunsmiths Forum.

Tom, Funny you should ask....but we don't use BB's.

They are not very round - after building a gauge to sort BB's by size and learning that "Precision" BB's vary in Diam by as much as .007, we use steel Balls for bearings.

11/64ths.

What sort of accuracy do those target BB guns produce?

designed for 5 meter 3 posistion competition, They can get under a .25" at that distance, fps about 375.
You might want to look into the .177 bb's from Hornady, lot less bounce back than steel ones. Course you can't use a magnet to pick them up when they are spilled (trust me it will happen) Took a year to get them all out of the carpet.

Scott,

When you showed us that BB rifle at the last match I knew you would come up with something ingenious. They look great and I'm sure will be the best shooting guns on the line.

Having gotten tired of you beating us like an old rug, I suggest you shoot one of them at our next match. Show your confidence in your work!

Dave

bb guns

The Bb's can be had from MSC or Mcmaster Carr - look for steel balls.

The girls shoot 5 meters standing, sitting, kneeling, prone. Prone the can keep 1/4" groups - standing and kneeling is another story.

Dave - i tried shooting them - standing, I can barely keep ahead of the girls..I guess Physical ability comes into play shooting positions. I think I will stick to Benchrest...not to mention, the girls laugh when I try to get up after shooting kneeling position for 10 minutes. Man that makes my legs go to sleep and takes a good 10 minutes of hobbling around to get back to normal.

I have 5 kids and they all love to shoot. At a recent Christmas party, one of the Grandparents seemed shocked when told by the youngest (8) he was already shooting a real rifle (22LR). She looked at me and started to question if this was true. Before I could defend myself, our oldest daughter(19) jumped in instead and asked grandma "Are you kidding? This is Scott's house, everybody shoots."

Update

This is Sarah(L) and Claire after their first match. Both did fantastic and lead their team to a Third place finish out of 10 County teams. In addition, Sarah took 1st place in overall standing position with a score of 91 out of 100. That was out of more than 70 kids.

2nd update

E gads! On the new list of things not to do. Don't let your kids take their Medals to school to show off. Especially when there is a picture of a rifle on them.

Luckily one of the reasonable teachers got wind of it and made sure they got home quietly.

The next day she took her winning target to school - and that's OK....just no pictures of guns.

Safety First

The biggest problem with BB guns is that the BB's can bounce back.

Hopefully everyone wears safety glasses, even those in the peanut gallery.

Stay safe and have fun.

UPdate!!

Well after 6 hours of practice every week for four months - Claire's Team finished 5th in State out of about 40 teams.

sorry the picture is fuzzy - Claire ended up ranked 2nd in the county, and both girls shot very well in State for first year shooters.

As you can see- this team is dominated by females as are many of the teams.

Great job

Congrats. to all......as far as being the lone boy in the group I see it as him having ENHANCED dateing possibilites.:) .Seriousley I wish our schools would allow such an activity (Shooting).but they are dominated by the ANTI's:(

That's awesome.......

your a good dad. Also thats 2 more BR shooters coming up.

not quite

Looks like a couple of High Power shooters! YEEEEEEEEEHAWWWWWWWW! 91 out of 100 standing...we may have another High Master on the way! Get those girls a tube gun!

That is really great!

I see the slings, are they allowed jackets and gloves?
