I need advice on my neckturning method. Maybe.

Hey Roy, Katrina kicked lots of people's butts, for sure. Glad you are recovering, that was a tough lick. I spent six weeks in and around New Orleans, after Katrina and Rita, was afraid my wife and cat would forget who i was. I don't know if this is correct, but when i turn case necks, i only remove about .003 with each cut, i use a light wt oil like FP10, or tap magic, and i degrease them with spray electrical contact cleaner, sprayed on heavy and stood up to dry in a loading block. Lots of good ideas, here. Good Shooting, Lightman

Increase your expander mandrel diameter a skosh and your problems will be eliminated.

It would seem that the closer the cutter mandrel fits the neck the more consistent the cut will be. That ain't right. The problems with heat expansion and brass galling on a tight fitting cutter mandrel exceed the problems that exist with a looser cutter mandrel. Lube doesn't do much if it's all scraped away.

Roy ...

I keep this process real simple. ;)

1. Lube inside of neck and expander mandrel with Imperial Sizing Die Wax (ISDW).

2. Expand neck. Leave the ISDW inside the case neck after expanding.

3. Place some ISDW on the First K&M turner mandrel.

4. Turn neck.

5. Place some ISDW on Second K&M turner mandrel.

6. Turn neck.

7. Chamfer and Deburr end of neck with appropriate tools.

8. Place neck in a wad of 0000 steel wool.

9. Clean inside of shoulder and neck with a cotton swab.

10. Clean outside of neck with a paper towel.

Note: Step 4 and steps 6 through 10 are accomplished with the case held in a K&M Case Holder which is chucked in a slow turning portable drill. The only job done in bulk is the expanding. Each case is then run through the above steps one at a time. :)

How to make my expander larger

>>>This is what I want to do. Any suggestions. Does K&M make larger OD expander mandrels. I've never asked them about that. I'm waiting for their new catalog. My last one is from 2003/2004 or thereabouts.<<<<

Don't know

But you're on the right track. Later, when you get the right "fit", you can quibble over which lube to use and feed rate.

Actually, if you can currently make cases that will safely fire in your rifle, your aggs aren't likely to improve by refining your case necks.....but that's how we roll.
