How to Score errant shot?

This was a 100 yd Benchrest Match for Score. Club match, not registered.

Target submitted had 5 legal shots in the 5 record bulls. An extra 'errant' shot was on the upper edge of target , well out of any record bull.

Reviewing the Rules for Score Shooting, I see no reference to any shot outside the record bulls.
How should this target be scored?
With no reference to shots outside the record bulls it is implied the shot be ignored.

this is why backers are employed- tells if shot came from different bench or not. not critical in a club match if it left up to range officer. heck of an under current if a registered match. Depending on the type of match many ways of dealing with cross fires/ extra shots. as an RO & being on the line in various matches I have had to deal with this over the years.

Backers at a score match....that's new to me.
There was no crossfire in this case. Rules cover crossfires extensively. Extra shots are addressed only as multiples in a record bull where lowest scoring shot counts or when first shot of match creeps up from siter to bull #5.
Otherwise, no mention of extra shots, hence the question.

I have had this happen a few times. I ask the shooter. Most times, they think they missed somehow. Usually get a surprised look.
I think, they are looking around the bull too hard. And miss it. And think "oh, well gotta have something".
In group. If outside the box it's a 1 or 2" penalty. Per hole. I think.
Our matches have turned into Fun Matches. Bring what ya got. Still try to follow the rules....Getting more shooters...
So I just let go. Still interested in this issue.....
Great question.

Here would be my argument using the IBS Hunter target. You have 6 targets on a sheet,
5 for scoring and one for sighters. Each "target" is defined for your purpose. The rest of the
sheet is not. My opinion would be that any, shot outside of a defined area would be
considered a fouler/barrel warmer.......

Yes , good argument and seemingly correct. Much better wording from IBS rules than NBRSA (IMHO) but principle same. Targets from both so similar. Would have to conclude this a reasonable answer and certainly have no deduction in score for that oops on the trigger. Hoping it lands outside the squares.

That's how I've seen it handled more than once. Not saying it's right or wrong but I can see the logic both ways. Pretty much, if the shot cuts, even a little, the record "square", it's a zero. If not..it's a sighter or whatever.
