I sprang for the aloris, and got a couple of posts with it.

How many (and what type) do you guys find useful ?

I’m thinking 3 or more turning / facing

2 bore holders,...

- more is always better, but typically how many do you use all the time.

LOL!

I buy the cheapest ones from Amazon as "Add-On Items" for 15 bucks. Altho every now and again I'll be feeling flush so's I'll stick one of these "XL" ones in for an exter 5 bucks...... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01IDLURC8/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A27F0FNA6WTMGT&psc=1 ............... just because I've inherited some 5/8 and 3/4 inch tooling and bits.

I have one or 2 each of the job-specific ones but most of mine are just the flat shelf or some have a milled groove.

I generally replace the screws with socket head allen capscrews from my local good hardware store.

22 dollars shipping on ONE ??

I have (guesstimating) 45-50 'regular' turning and boring holders. (with the 1/2"x1/2" slot). Three or four boring bars, a knurling tool, a parting tool, an Aloris threading tool (that I don't really use anymore), and probably a couple that I use so seldom they don't come to mind. But, as you can tell, the "plain" toolholder is the one you need many of, and 'many' will never be enough. If you buy 20 and only fill 5, or 7, rest assured that that is a temporary condition.

GsT

I have a dozen

but almost always end up changing out a tool if I put a day in the shop. Boring bars would be the most likely for me to change out and I have 4 set up.

I've been using the Banggood tools and inserts of late. Great cheap carbide, at least for hackers like me. Banggood is a great source for we "Fixed Incomers".

I just completed rounding out my “starter” set of tooling .... OUCH !

Now I know why you guys say - if you want to be a millionaire gunsmith, start out with 2 Million.

At the end of the day, I didn’t want my dream lathe, with no parts to use it, so I bought the tooling first... now I have to recover from that to buy the lathe itself.

I did get to release some endorphins thought... but once you rip off the bandaid, and buy the tools, you feel better about it. I guess I’m not playing around anymore.

What are you using 8 holders for on a manual lathe? I only used three, turning, threadding and boring. Drilling and reaming were done in the tailstock. I do use nine positions on my CNC turret, but that includes a drilling station, reaming station, three boring bars and grooving tool for the higbee thread. I could reduce the boring bars down to one, and rough/finish with the VBMT if I really wanted to.

it is actually pretty simple.
not everyone does a job the same way.
i like lots of tools used for a specific job, not a close enough generic.
so 3 will never work for me.
you do it your way, the rest of us will do it our way.....more tool holders.
no i am not taking lessons from you.
