Houston warehouse

Frank Wilson was mentioned in the article as shooting in the warehouse. Frank and T. J. were good buddies. If he's at New Braunfels this year, I'll talk to him about shooting in it.

I do enjoy these Houston Warehouse threads and all of the input from people who were there or were close to the whole thing. Thanks all!

Some recollections

A while back, I was trying to write an article on Henry Christman. PS folded before I got it published, but I did talk to some interesting old-time shooters. I think it was Frank Wilson that told me that they had to keep a fan going behind the bench or they got some really squirrelly mirage. He also said that a lot of guys that thought they had world-beating rifles, including Henry, brought them to shoot at the warehouse and went away humbled. They learned fast that anything but top quality bullets and first-class brass prep was a waste of time.

so does any modern shooter bore the necks of their brass ?

No.

Or at least, no one I know of. We turn necks to within .0001 for both straightness and wall thickness consistency.

Over the years, I have talked with several shooters who visited the Warehouse, including Don and Frank. As a shooter who competes, I came to the conclusion that it was an exercise in futility as far as the experience being translated to The Competitive Arena.

Yes, for sure on 22 PPC and sometimes on 6PPC.

DOES IT HELP. When shooting a bag gun in the elements it's hard to see a 0.025" improvement but it can't hurt. Many of the Old Masters tried different methods of finessing their brass even to the point of removing the hills and valleys the cutter leaves.

Does rough, inconsistent, brass shoot in the "ones-even zeros"? Probably not. Does perfectly consistent brass shoot some zeros? With top ability shooters, it can.

.

I have a reamer that replaces the inside pilot on my case length trimmer. I had it made to cut out the "dreaded donut". I use it sometimes to make the neck inside perfectly round before turning them. Does it help? Can't hurt.

Saying all this, I think we do, now, have better, more consistent, brass than 25-30 years ago.

I sure do miss shooting at the Volunteer club. Don and the Cajun crew. TJ camping beside me. Gammon and the Canadian crew staying up all night making this redneck look respectable. The Texans passing around a mason jar of peppers that would light you up. I had a call yesterday from Henry Schimpf, Les 's son. Les did all the work for Nick Young, another legend in his own mind. Called Les and we had a good chat. I miss those days. We shot pretty damn good back then.

Come back to the Super Shoot. My camper is fixed now so we don't have to stay in a motel 35 miles away. I'll bring plenty of guns and bullets. We might even invite Meredith, Gammon, and Walley in for some Apple Pie (in a mason jar)...Oh, and some Jameson!!!

Jerry,
I want to shoot this year. My growing problem is getting the new shop built and getting the business moved in time. I have a new gig starting in April and had planned to be moved in March. I couldn't find a contractor that wanted my money until recently. I'm afraid all this is going happen at the same time and once again shooting will suffer.
