gun cases

Hi new to the forum, I have a question though.

What make of gun case do you guys prefer to haul your guns around in? Pelican, Vanguard, or what else?

Thanks

Depends on many different factors.

How expensive is the gun
How critical is it to protect the zero
How long is the gun
How far are you going
How much gear will get piled on top of it
Will the gun ride in the cab or in the bed

As an example, in F-class you have unlimited sighters and the rifle rides on the back seat so I do not feel the need tor a hard case just to drive on the interstate for 45 minutes. On the other hand if I am driving 3,000 miles with two months worth of gear to hunt and the rifles are in the back then they get hard cases commensurate with their individual cost. The least costly gets the cheapest case.

The Plano Airglide case is popular with benchresters. It is relatively inexpensive and fits rifles with 3" wide forends. It would probably not be the best choice for air travel because it is a little too light. It cradles the rifle stock and prevents bumping the barrel or scope.

Another vote for the AirGlide. For carting a scoped rifle around it’s great. I sure wouldn’t want to ship the H&H to Africa in one for the hunt of a lifetime (provided I had an H&H or was going to Africa).
Amazon sells them for less than $40.
A tall AR type rifle with big scope won’t fit, but most “normal” bolt rifles with scopes fit fine.

Ditto on Air Glide....cheap enough to own several....I take multiple guns to the range.....yet they offer good protection during the trip- they ride in the bed of the pick-up.

Another vote for the Plano Airglide, I got mine at Dick's Sporting Goods for about $35. I liked it so much, I went back and bought another one.

I have three Plano Airglides. Only problem is that occasionally a plastic buckle will break. I call them on the phone and they send 2 or 3 at no cost.

Ditto on the Plano Cases. I've got 4. Now if someone could just figure out how to stack them when not using they would be perfect.

Funny, you go to tournaments and hardly anybody uses the single gun Plano Airglides, all you usually see are 2 gun size carry cases in aluminum or the Gungaurds..........guess competitors have more money than sense............Don

I agree the air glides look cool and might be OK if you just shoot locally. But when I'm traveling 12 hrs one way to a week long match and dragging a case in and out of motels and packing, unloading, and reloading a SUV constantly, how they stack is a major consideration. And I don't see two air glides stacking all that well. For that reason I use a double gun SKB which is plenty heavy duty and fits two BR guns and four cleaning rods (creatively). Having said that, it's a bit long to maneuver around stair cases in motels and I've been thinking of trying an AR style case that is shorter and taller - at the expense of doing something else with my rods. I think case selection is always going to be a tradeoff and having more than one case would be handy - depending on the nature of the road trip you're taking. I certainly would rather spend my BR budget on barrels or powder or something else besides cases but a having a convenient way to protect your investment is $ well spent.

If you're carrying an expensive benchrest rifle, you might want to look into Plano's version of the Pelican: multiple latches, high density foam, wheels and accommodations for locks. The biggest benefit is that they're $100 cheaper than a Pelican. You used to be able to buy Storm cases at reasonable prices but then Pelican wet and bought them and raisd the prices.

Many, many years ago I got stuck (long story; I won't go into it here) running an Olympic qualifying match. Those folks travel all over the world with their guns and refuse to scrimp on cases. At the time, about 75% of them used Kalispel cases. I was impressed, both by the unanimity of choice and the quality of the cases.

But that was a long time ago; I haven't bought a Kalispel in over a decade. Can anybody with more recent experience tell me if they still make good cases?
