My friends, from the early 60's, rock-n-roll song........

"Mama said they'd be days like this, they'd be days like this my mama said, mama said...."

Just came from the range, 39 degrees, no wind.......testing SPEC 9, THE GEORGIA SHAKER........

All I can say is: "MAMA SAID THEY'D BE DAYS LIKE THIS,THEY'D BE DAYS LIKE THIS, MY MAMA SAID.................."

Oh my friends........I love our sport.....

The "Shaker" will be on its way shortly to its new owner........

Singing out loud, agian,..."Mama said they'd be days like this, they'd be days like this my mama said, mama said, mama said............"

I love that old rock-n-roll song...

THE GEORGIA SHAKER......

Georgia Shaker...RIGHT ON!!!

Bill,

I hope that your spec #9....the Georgia Shaker shoots as great as its namesake.

Named after a series of '60's match race super stockers and factory experimental drag cars piloted by Hubert Platt. He was quite the showman and consumate racer. His iron was always top notch and he was usually the fastest ford A'FXer...only to be slightly edged out by the factory tube framed flip top Mercuries.

He was also a moonshine runner in earlier days and is in no way ashamed of his over the road exploits.

This rifle has a wonderful name to live up to and I'm sure that it will do you proud as I know that it did not leave your shop until it sang a sweet song.

Friend Joseph:

I got to see the "Shaker" run a best of three, match race back in the middle to late 60's......he ran against a car called, I believe, the "Quarter Hoss"...although I could be mistaken...

When Hubert started that thing, man, it was obvious where the name "Shaker" came from....the ground shook!

If I remember, they only ran two of the three races.....guess who won!

I decided long ago that my first SPEC rifle going to Georgia would carry that name, in honor of getting to see the "Georgia Shaker" in person as a kid.

You are wrong about the name, it came from the shaker scoop sticking thru the hood.

A picture is worth a thousand words...

Many of us wish you would post some nice pictures with text listing details... :)

Friends Joseph and Jody

Joseph and Jody:

Thanks Jody for the link........

My friend Joseph is an old time drag racer and salt flat racer.....and a heck of a rimfire benchrester......anyway, Joseph, I'm pretty sure the Shaker I saw was a 66' to maybe a 68' Mustang, not the Falcon.....also, does the name "Quarter Hoss", (the car Hubert raced against) ring a bell or am I dreaming? It seems like it may have been a Dodge?

Friend Dennis: I'm afraid I've wore out my welcome with pictures of my SPEC rifles.....I know the thread with the "Duke" got deleted......not everyone cares to see them.....I understand this.....I'm completing the cosmetics on the Shaker today.......

Bill

Your memory is still pretty good. One of the more prominent match racers back in the day was the "Quarter Horse." ......a Mustang with the front end stretched out longer. It ran pretty good and was booked into tracks for best of three matches fairly often with the Georgia Shaker.

Those were the days. Besides my fuel dragster, I drove a couple of match race Chevrolets. It was a big production, burning through two strips of powdered rosin and having a crew member sweep it back into my tracks and burning through again. It really gave added traction and built excitement in the stands, afterall, we were paid to put on a show.

I always had a crew member take out a Mason Jar and pour what the track anouncer claimed to be moonshine into the bumper mounted fuel tank just before the run. The crowd went wild and nitro-methane burns better with a few different hydro carbons added to the mix. We tried every thing...including hydrazine in the fuel.

Thanks Bill for the trip back to those Glory Days.

Back to shooting

Bill,

Are you coming down to Jackies and shoot with us on Jan.3 @ noon?(Buck Creek, near Somerset, Ky)

Just like those great night matches we had...just earlier in the day.

I'm putting a 36 power scope on that sporter that you built and shooting it with the Big Dogs.
